Steam Controller

Steam Controller

My on-screen keyboard is very glitchy - doesn't track properly, video demonstration
Here's what happens when I try to use the on-screen keyboard - https://youtu.be/51P6AIVXqGc

I tried to type "this is a test wtf whydoesnt this work right" [sic] and as you can see what came out is complete gibberish. Whenever I click on the trackpad, the letter that is activated is often very far from where my finger is. The letter that is highlighted as I drag across the trackpad gets stuck and the only thing I can do to work around it is move to the letter I want, then lift my finger and drop it back down precisely in the same spot.

I've had this problem since I got the controller mid-october. I thought maybe the feature just wasn't fleshed out yet since it's still essentially pre-release hardware and was hoping it'd be fixed sometime this month, but then I saw a video of a guy playing Typing of the Dead with the on-screen keyboard and realized that other people are not having this problem. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Might need to post it on the big picture forums as a bug report.

I watched the video - at half speed - and there really isn't anything to see outside of what appears to be a very bad typer, so thats not really helping when it comes to determining whats your actual problem.

Are you currently using the beta client and is this problem persistent through multiple different games?

MrSmith, I'm a "bad typer" because the keyboard doesn't work. This is literally the first time I've tried typing out a whole sentence because it wouldn't work right so I just got up and used the pc keyboard when I need to. Every time a letter flashes, that indicates that I'm clicking down on the trackpad. How do you not notice that often when a letter flashes, the circle that represents my finger is on the other side of the keyboard?

Yes, I'm using the beta client and the issue persists between games.

I did notice that. The thing is that it's nothing unusual, the very same thing happens for me when the controller is connected to my laptop, the keyboard is lagging a bit behind in your motions which causes the delayed flashing of letters.

Since i doubt i am the only one who has experienced this i'd call it a rather common issue, yet it does not explain what you are describing. The wrong inputs are not random, they are always letter you have hovered over and seemingly did an input for, due to the delay that is only displayed seconds later.

So yeah. that is why your video just looks like you are bad at typing and really does not help determine the problem. The only thing it showcases there is a different issue that is not related to what you actually need help with.

literally every time I click the trackpad it inputs the currently highlighted letter, ie the one that flashes. The highlighted letter does not track my finger even though the circle does. It does not input the letter that the circle is hovering over. As I was typing I was watching where the circles were to make sure I was clicking when the circle was hovering over the letter that I wanted. I don't know how much more clearly I can describe the problem.

here's some timestamps with more details:
0:13 - I was hovering over 'i', clicked down and the letter that was input was 'k'
0:17 - I was hovering over 'i' again, clicked down and the letter 'n' was input. Are you telling me that's normal?
0:17 - I was hovering over 's', the letter 't' is input.
0:18--0:26 the keyboard works as it should. "test wtf" is what I meant to type, and that's what came out.
0:26 - hovering over 'h', got an 'm
0:29 - hovering over 'o', got a 'j'
0:30 - hovering over 'e', got a 'd'
0:30 - hovering over 's', got a 'd' again because the highlighted letter still hasn't even moved
0:35 - hovering over 'i', got a 'j'
0:37 - hovering over 'o', got a '?'
0:40 - hovering over 'g', got a 'f'

Sometimes keyboard input with some DX11 based games will give issues for some reason.

Games that come to mind would be the latest red faction game from a few years ago & when loading into GTA V if you try to type to a friend using the overlay or in another app their will be delay on key input.

Here you can see that the letters don't react "light up" when the thumb is hovering over them.[i.imgur.com]

#CuteFaceJay, this happens in any game that I try to run. I loaded up Typing of the Dead and it happened there too, which I know has not happened to other people because I've seen someone doing fairly well in the game with just the steam controller. When I try using the keyboard within the Big Picture interface for searching my library, it works MUCH better, but I still wouldn't say it's working "correctly" as there's still significant "drag" on the tracking.

I too have this exact problem for what it's worth. It's as though the click handlers and highlighting lag behind where the cursor gets rendered. If I click while the cursor is hovering over a letter that is not highlighted, it will click the currently highlighted character, and then will often suddenly select the correct character. This leads to a typing workflow that is basically:

1) Move cursor over desired character.
*correct character usually won't be selected*
2) Press right paddle to enter character.
*correct character will (often) become selected*
3) Press left shoulder button to delete character.
4) Press right paddle to enter character again.
5) See if character was entered, and repeat if not.

I'm surprised I haven't seen more posts on this, since I don't seem to be alone.

This issue makes the OSK unusable for me.
I have to disconnect all other xinput devices to get correct OSK functionality.
Valve should fix it.

Did you really have to reply to a 6 month old post to say that? I would understand if it was more like a day old, but 6 months?

Yes, the answer is yes. :steamhappy:

@anyone In all seriousness there have been reports on and off again about this sort of thing. One thing for anyone stumbling across this to check is make sure your nVidia GPU is being used for steam itself. Especially for laptop users who have an iGPU and a dedicated nVidia GPU. The nVidia drivers can sometimes not properly detect what GPU should be used and so you will have to force it in the driver settings. Just make sure steam.exe is set to use the dedicated GPU. This has permanently solved this issue for some other users. If it does not, please try posting a new thread because necro threads are often very outdated and won't be of much use. Plus, we like to not look into them that often so if you want a real response, post new.

It also doen't hurt to go through this too. (Shameless plug)

I did end up fixing the problem. The jittering/poor detection was being caused by a VJoy controller emulation tool that I had installed to use Gamecube controllers on my PC. When I stopped the driver and uninstalled it, my steam controller became completely stable.
