Steam Controller on Console? (PS3)
Is there anyway to change the default steam controller config (the one enabled when Steam is not running) to just a traditional X-input controller so that a person could use this while gaming on another console? Any plans to allow this sort of functionality in the future?

Short answer? No. Long Answer? Still no. BUT there are some people who have used a KB/M to console device and had limited success with SC on consoles. At this point its just no and most assuredly will remain no. The steam software is more that 90% of what the steam controller is and without that the controller is just a stupid little useless piece of plastic and wires. If there were software and hardware that could pass it along maybe but unless you are a decently talented coder with hardware experience then it will simply never happen.

The controller in its current state already seems to be able to be picked up by the PS3 in my limited testing, in the few mouse/keyboard compatible games that are already available I could already use the mouse as right touchpad and a random assortment of other buttons that are picked up by the system.

If I could change the default config that the controller uses when steam is not running then I'd be golden really, even if the thing is picked up as Mouse/KB rather than a traditional controller. Is that at all possible? Messing around in the controller_base settings doesn't seem to give me what I'm looking for, they all seem to be templates based on Steam running from the outset.

This is because all of the features you want are not actually performed by the controller at all. They are done by the steam client software. If the SC could do this itself it would need much more than a simple microcontroller and a radio. What your PS3 is seeing is the basic HID compliant part of the steam controllers functions, these cannot be changed. Like I said, if it is not being used through the steam software there is nothing else that can be done without adding both hardware and software to make it do what you want. Another thing is that the SC only has an Xinput mode and nothing else, as such a PS3 would never be able to see it anyways seeing as it doesn't work with and XBOX controller either. I hope this cleared at least something up for you. :)

No, and Valve has not revealed any plans to do so.

Honestly, this is my biggest problem with the Steam controller currently.

Also, you are mistaken about X-input and PS3s. PS3 supports the HID standard, not X-input. The Steam controller would need to report as an HID gamepad (which is easily possible, Valve just needs to do it) to work on the PS3 as a gamepad rather than keyboard/mouse.
