Steam Controller

Steam Controller

[Fixed]Controller only works if I unplug my keyboard.
This happens with any controller I use (xbox 360 via wireless adapter, xbox one wired, or steam controller wirelessly). I thought it was the USB slot up until today and I said screw it and tried to charge my phone with the slot, sure enough it worked fine.

What happens is the PC will recognize the controller, but it won't do anything past that unless my keyboard is unplugged. I really have no idea why it does this, and would love a solution as I use a controller quite often. It is really annoying and I am finally fed up enough with it to try and figure out the issue. I googled around, looked around steam forums, and couldn't find a solution. I will do pretty much anything to try and fix this.

Dint had that problem but i know that the controller is listed as keyboard/mouse device instead of a controller. Dont know if that help, never plugged 2 keyboard in same time but maybe your comp react badly to that. But also might want to go in beta, they fix alot of problem in it, maybe your's is already fixed in it.

Could you elaborate a bit more as to your computer configuraton (Specs), including peripherals being used as well as any software that accompanies it. Then we'll have a better idea as to how to guide you in correcting this issue.

As others have said, this is generally tied to an issue with software, but there could be other culprits such as specific peripherals that conflict with other devices. An example would be logitech devices (G13) tend to render other gaming devices unfunctional. Yet, even if that is the case, there are resolutions that can be taken to resolve the issue.

Make sure to include your complete specifications and any devices used for reference. I'll subscribe to this duscussion and await a response. Good luck and have a nice day.

Sounds like a driver deathmatch.

Here are the specs:

I am using a Zowie FK2 (no special gaming drivers) and a poker 3 (which also has no special gaming drivers). Also have a Blue Snowball with no drivers and my headset is the beyerdynamic DT770 pros 250 ohms.

I really want to get this problem fixed, as I am trying to fix all the little problems with my PC that have been annoying me (Got my front IO working on my case, and fixed my headphones quality).

I know it definetly a driver issue and can be solved within device manager I just have no idea what I am doing or what to look for and fix.

Thanks for the response.

Edit: The difference in that list is I swapped out the GTX 770 for a ASUS GTX 980, and I am now running windows 10, have three of those same monitors, and am using powerline ethernet adapters instead of a wifi adapter.

I am already in the beta, and I know what you are talking about, but I have no idea how to go about doing that and check for that.

Hmm i think it's in Control pannel and printer and device option or something like that.

I know how to get to device manager, but tell me do you know what to do from here? http://i.imgur.com/RWG8etP.png

It is not because the SC is detected as M+KB, because the issue is with the Xbox controller as well.

Or rather, the issue is with something else other than the controllers. Perhaps the keyboard? That's some swanky keyboard you have. Looks like you can program the keys at a hardware level (directly inputting codes for key responses into the keyboard without using a PC software package/driver as intermidiary).

Could it be that the keyboard creators, clearly having a gaming market in mind as part of their target audience, allow you to allocate controller button functions to keyboard keys? If so that could be a factor.

Try it with a more average keyboard, just to see (borrow if you don't have an old one). Does everything work? That would be a clue.

You might find better advice on any support forum you can find for your keyboard. Especially as it affects Xbox controllers as well. I bet others with your keyboard have had this issue.

No it is not just that keyboard. It has been a problem for as far as I can remember, and I plugged in another keyboard and I am typing on it right now. I am 90% sure it is an issue with drivers, and something that can be solved within device manager. I just have no idea how to use it.

how about start by uninstalling the driver for Steam controller first under device manager and reinstalling it back?

I can't guide u on how to do this because I don't own a controller so u'll have to go find the discussion that pointed out what to uninstall as Steam controller is identified as something else within device manager (I read it somewhere but forgot where the discussion is right now)....

I think this issue might be even cumbersome than just reinstalling the Steam controller drivers as I read about driver conflicts that users had pointed out.....which again I can't link since I'm subscribed to so many and have read so many.....

Nope, because the Xbox controller is also affected. Can't be SC drivers. Also, since a basic keyboard also causes issues it can't be the keyboard drivers. So, next I wonder about USB drivers. Are you using USB3? If so, what happens if you try a USB2 port instead? For both keyboard and controller? USB3 often uses custom drivers whilst USB2 usually uses MS drivers. My USB3 ports won't work with an XBone controller for example.

Another idea, try putting the keyboard and controllers on different USB controllers. So KB on USB3 and controllers on USB2 for example. Less chance of one affecting the other?

Well, I had everything on USB 3 before, now I switched the wireless steam adapter over to the USB 2 port right above it, and it works now. Funny because I tried different ports but they were all USB 3. Thanks for the help, hopefully the problem stays fixed! :D

You can accept my FR and I will get you a little something for helping me out if you'd like :)

USB3 is also known to cause interference on the 2.4GHz (the bluetooth band, and most wireless peripherals these days). The thing is it can even broadcast interference via wired peripherals (the cord acts like an antenna).

Just one article on the subject:
