The holy trinity of precision aiming, TRY THIS!
It wasn't until last week I realized the controller has a gyro in it. I think I read about it somewhere before that, but didn't think much of it.

Then I attached the gyro to "mouse" and set it to activate on right trackpad touch and I was suddenly in a whole new world of super precision when aiming.

THE HOLY TRINITY IS THIS:
1. Apply "mouse" to right trackpad, so you can use this to steer your sight when walking / running. Set sensitivity at a comfortable level for moving around.
2. Set the alternate mode for the right trackpad to "mouse" and lower the sensitivity to enable precision aiming. Set this mode to active on something like "ready weapon" in the game. This enables precision aiming when you are about to shoot.
3. Set the gyro to "mouse" and set it to activate on "right trackpad touch". Set the sensitivity quite low, to allow for last minute twitch aiming. This will actually follow the aim of the controller towards the screen, which is really, really intuitive.

With these 3 in place, you are on the road to controller aim precision heaven.:steamhappy:

When mine is delivered I shall try this. So many things I am looking forward to try as far as programing goes.

There's also "Trigger Dampening" that's been added as an option. Played around with it a bit last night and it could work fantastic for a scoped weapon or when you just want to knock the mouse sensitivity through the floor. The default setting damn near makes the mouse lock in place when you have the trigger partially squeezed. Great for people that might have trouble with their aim tweaking whenever they squeeze the trigger.

Yeah this is such a great way to do shooters. Honestly this feature is what sets this controller above twin thumbstick controllers for FPS games.

I tried that myself this morning, but with minimal luck. Admittedly, I didn't try for long. I felt like playing something else. At some time I'll try again. I'm getting kind of tired of trying to play shoots with this thing.

[edit] oh, wait. I ran into a weird binding bug. I figured I'd try again later.

This is what makes Splatoon so good on the Wii U.

I don't follow. How is this comparable to the WiiU controller? (I don't have one, so I don't know)

the wii u gamepad (the large one with a screen, the 'classic console controller' is the pro u) has a gyroscope in it, allowing you to aim with it, and being light it's easy to hold while flinging around like an insane person

in wind waker and captain toad I've found it excellent for aiming.

I have toyd around with the gyro a lot and while i certainly see the advantages of this kind of aiming and the undoubtly increased precision that comes with it i just do not like it. Unless you want to go super competitve in some kind of online shooter - which is absolutely not my thing - the non gyro aiming is perfectly fine.

If you want an "alternate aiming mode" setting up lower sensitivity on button press is pretty much all you need and i even found myself able to control recoil rather decently with the right trackpad settings.

It's a great option and i am glad the Gyro is a feature but it just doesn't fit the way i like to play and it's gladly far from a necessity.
Marking this as I want to come back here once my controller arrives.. if there's any new thoughts on this I'd be interested

There are YouTube videos, and many threads in this forum and reddit about this that were made when this controller launched. This is how everyone plays FPS with the Steam controller.

The Steam controller has a highly precise gyroscope and accelerometer incorporated. That means that this controller can know through sensors it's position in the real world. You can configure to use it as a driving wheel, or as said in this thread to aim actually moving your controller. It is also pretty good for playing many wii games with an emulator.

p.s. maybe they should had kept this thread pinned or something as many people looks for this info or have the same questions.

I use the gyro but hadn't thought about this ... might have to try that.
