Steam Controller

Motion Sickness
Hi together,

first I'd like to say that i really like my Steam Controller and playing games with it, but it seems like my brain is to stupid to handle the controls while I play FPS games like Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide (which is a nice game) because after 30 minutes i get Motion Sickness. As long as i play with Mouse and Keyboard, everything is fine but as soon as i start playing with the Controller i get sick again. Has someone else expierenced this?

For me it looks like i need time to adapt to it so my brain doesn't act like I'm poisoned. :woodlehappy:

I've not run into this problem yet, but my guess is that the "jerkiness" of the SC's touchpad might be messing with you. I played Skyrim with the controller and noticed that the mouse-look was not as smooth with the SC as it was with the mouse. It might be cured by a setting, but I'm still looking.

There's definitely more jitter than with a mouse, so if you're partially susceptible that might be enough to put you over the edge.

Try turning smoothing all the way up, both in the controller config and in-game. I did that to help precision, but it might reduce the perceptual strain as well.

Maybe also try using the gyroscope for aiming. I've heard some people report that they usually get motion sick playing shooters, but Splatoon is okay for them because of the stronger association with real physical movement.

And be sure to report back if you find something that makes it better. I'm sure Valve will be eager to know how to reduce vomiting on their new hardware.

Set the smoothing in advanced settings to maximum. See how you feel then.

I've been playing CS:GO with the Steam Controller and I got motion sickness too. It had never happened to me while using K+B...

At least you are not the only one. I'm going to try out the smoothing option and maybe next week some ginger. I've heard that this should reduce the intensity of the motion sickness.

EDIT: "Ginger root is commonly thought to be an effective anti-emetic, but it is ineffective in treating motion sickness." Wikipedia

Well, just want to add that I too get motion sickness when playing doom using the SC. I switched to an Xbox one controller and no sickness with that. I was using the gyro with the SC, don't know if that made it worse or less worse. Anyway I got quite sick, had to stop playing after about 15min, couldn't play for 2h. Too bad, cause I was getting the hang of using the touchpad with the gyro.

I have the same problem....
I never had a motion sickness before, but I got a few when I played Portal 2 and Talos with Steam Controller :(.
I tried them with mouse + keyboard and also with a 10Euro crappy gamepad and I had no problems ...

Even though it might be the controller that triggered your motion sickness, I'd say don't focus too much on that. The main thing that solves motion sickness for people is still increasing the field of view in the game. Also making sure that you're playing in a well lit room is supposed to help quite a lot.
