It might not be possible for Valve to "fix" those games. It could easily be that those games are coded in such a way that they ignore one method of input while you are using another. (ignoring the gamepad if you are using the mouse, etc.)
Really? This thing is useless then!... the right pad does not work at all in 'stick emulator' mode. It's really laggy and awful.. with very limited options for fixing it. They might have a major problem on their hands. The whole point is to use the pad like a mouse, whilst having the stick and contort of a controller on the left...
There is hope that future games will make a better use of this controller, but Valve should work on better drivers too.
You can treat the whole thing as keyboard and mouse for those games and there should be no problem. Getting the left stick to emulate wasd is fairly simple.
As for the stick emulation for the right pad, I can't comment on that since I haven't *wanted* a right stick for anything, but based on some conversation on this forum, it sounds like the defaults for it are not the greatest and it actually can work really well once configured correctly.
But then you'd have to map ALL the buttons.. manually? in the controller mode, they are already mapped. I've always used a x360 controller, I don't have to configure it for every game and that also means I don't know the keyboard binds for most games off the top of my head. Plus, it's an analogue stick, you can't 'walk' when it's in WSAD mode without using a modifier button. Using Tomb Raider as an example.. I think there was analogue movement in Tomb Raider 3! What a pain in the ass.
Once more early adopters make profiles, you can borrow their profiles to remap less. This kind of stuff is to be expected with new products.
For those particular games that are coded badly, that would be the case. However, it does appear that the "directional pad" option has an "analog emulation" setting that may give you a compromise. I haven't used it, so I don't know what it actually does.
Also, that wouldn't exactly make the controller useless, since the controller still can work like a nicer mouse+keyboard, which is a big plus.
Some people might find merit with it, but if it doesn't allow me to use analog, I'm going to use an XBox controller. If it doesn't allow me to use mouse, I'm going to use the keyboard/mouse. To me, it's pretty obsolete if it doesn't allow for analog stick + mouse look. I have better solutions for both. If it worked, then it really would be a great device. I hope they can fix it. I know it's early. For most of my games, though, it's going in a drawer.
Indeed.. that's the whole selling point of it. I've just tried Portal 2, a game Valve specifically made a setup for controller.. and that's exactly how it works! Proper analogue stick on the left and the mouse on the right pad. Works pretty well. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I've played that game a few times!.. so that's not much use to me! Need that config enabled for all other FPS's please.
