Steam Controller

How do I configure the controller?
I have gone through the settings in Big Picture Mode and all I can find is a UI that lets me see what buttons I am pressing. I can't find where to change any of the settings or bindings.

The controller itself does work. It is detected by Steam, and I can push the buttons and see the picture light up. I can also use the trackpad the move the mouse around, but I can't find where to change any of the settings.

I did opt in to the client beta and I am running the latest update

Start a game, then press the steam button to open the overlay. There is a configure controller option there.

I want to use it in games outside of Steam

We should wait till dedicated steam controller drivers are released.

Why would I want to rebind my keyboard? I'd like to be able to configure the two haptic pads to do something different

EDIT: Hold on, I might be on to something

Ok so heres what I dug up

To edit the steam controllers key bindings:

Go to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\controller_base

and open app_generic.vdf in a text editor, from there you can modify anything

Will make a guide

Thanks Rantis! :D
I was wondering if it was also possible to apply specific mappings to non-fullscreen games/apps that cant show any overlays, like photoshop to name an example. Where ABXY would be turned into Ctrl Alt Shift Space

Nice find! I've just been messing with them myself. Have you figured out how to reload them so the controller recognizes the new configurations?

Ok, you have me interested. Hopefully this leads to a way to get the gamepad recognized as a gamepad by default. I want to be able to set the default for my controller to an HID-compliant gamepad so that I can use this with my PS3. (My PS3 right now views it as a kayboard and mouse)

You need to unplug and reconnect the dongle

Thanks for posting this. I have a question about the group 1 setting. It looks like there are values for wsad, but testing in a text editor, I can't seem to make them trigger. Anyone know how?
