Steam Controller
Wireless Dongle Stuck in Desktop USB hub
When I first went to test the controller on my PC, I plugged the wireless dongle into the USB hub supplied with the Steam Controller. After messing around with it for a bit, I went to try to unplug the dongle from the hub to take into my living room to test with the Steam Link. To my surprise, the dongle is completely stuck in the usb hub. Won't budge at all. At this point I'm questioning the build quality of those two pieces because the housing on the dongle even fell apart from trying to get a grip on it to remove it. Is there some trick I'm missing?

I think the idea was so you have a cord included that can let you use it wired.
That part I do agree with. The inclusion of the micro USB cable for use as a data cable is much more important than being able to extend the dongle. The controller does work over USB without the need to install batteries which is good for people trying to save money or temporarily out of batteries. Or purists who believe that wired is superior in eliminating lag, though I'm sure such a concern is unwarranted in the case of this particular device.
well, I remember the 360 had some insame lag issues. 20ms was added to the latency and for most people, and casuals it doesnt matter but that is more than one frame which is about 16ms. PS3 was as little as 4ms but it greatly depended on the environment it was being used in. I remember a write up saying it should be less than 9 any time it was actually working. Normally bluetooth adds 30-40 ms or more but Sont did some non standard hackery to make it work better than most. Valve, on the other had, I am sure they keep it low, way way low. This is the reason bluetooth was canned as even a possibility so they could focus on as low latency as they could manage. This is alos the reason having a way to get the receiver as far from your tower as you can is a big deal and super handy. The farther away it is from an EMI source the better it will perform.
The strange thing is that Valve included some barbed hooks ("Widerhaken" in german, hope you understand what i mean :D ) in the usb slot of the hub...
Because of them it is so hard/impossible to unplug the usb dongle without much force in most cases.
I was also unable to unplug the dongle without tools and noticed the hooks after that.
Hmmm.. usually, a dongle needs lubricant to insert, not to remove. *ducks*

+1 this topic. I plugged it into the hub that came with the controller, it was very difficult to get into the port, the micro usb plug was also difficult to plug into the micro-usb port on the hub.
Sorry, but it is a hardware manufacturing tolerances thing. There really isn't anything to be done but maybe use a standard extension cable instead. Maybe Valve might offer a replacement for the dongles that are faulty in the future. Just not now.
Im more suprised the dongle has as much 'heft' as it does. Its pretty heavy consdering all it is, is a usb extender dock

I think it is deliberately weighted to keep it standing firmly. There are tine little dongles from other devices or that can be bought online that are smaller or lighter if this is an issue for you.
The stand is weighted to keep the antenna at a 90 degree angle to the controllers signal.

Mine was stuck too. If you push it laterally (while pulling it free), towards the back of the hub, you can pull it out. It's still a ♥♥♥♥♥ though.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that worked. I had to push it in and I thought it was stuck in a bad position. Thanks!

OMG thank you so much! I thought mine was going to be stuck in there forever as I didn't want to force it out in case I broke it. :yay: :steamhappy:
I had the same issue with the wireless adapter for the xbox controller. Using a collar stick to push away the metal holders inside the hub will free the usb. Push in the collar stick while gently pulling on the usb, if it doesnt work try the other side, for me it worked instantly. There is a video about it on youtube if you search for "how to remove a stuck lightning cable"
