Connecting steam controller to steam link without dongle
Hi All,

I'm trying to connect my steam controller to my steam link without it's usb dongle.
According to the help this should be possible:
-Power on your Steam Link, ensuring no other input devices are connected
-Once booted, the Steam Link will prompt you to connect an input device
-On your Steam Controller press, and hold the X button and tap the Steam button to pair your Steam Controller and Steam Link

However the steam link does not find my controller.
I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Read several topics where you could find the controller over bluetooth.
However the link didn't find anything over bluetooth.
(Even tried to connect my phone but no luck there either.)

Any idea what I am doing wrong.
Would really love to be able to use my steam controller without removing the usb from my computer every time.

Thank you in advance.

Yours
Martijn

Just to add, my steam link and my controller are further more functioning perfectly.
When I put in the usb dongle, the controllers also works super with my link.

Wow, I thought it needed the dongle! I'll have to try this method, I'll let you know if anything goes wrong.

So how did you end up getting it to work? With the dongle?
GrimShins Jan 9, 2016 @ 10:05pm
Don't hold X after you've turned the controller on.

@deadering please let me know.

All in all haven't been able to get it to work.
@GrimShins thank you also did try it like that.
I'm affraid something is not working within the steam link.
Just not sure, that's why I want to know if this works with other and / if they did something different to get this to work.

Else I'll try to contact support tomorrow to see if my link is broken :(

My guess is that your controller is already paired to both the Link and the USB dongle, but set to use the USB dongle at the moment.
Try turning on the controller by pressing A + Steam and it should switch between pairings.

Tried this as well.
Regretfully still nothing.

Anyway to see with what devices my controller is paired ?

Also when I use x + power-on or a + power-on the light at the steam button starts blinking.
So I assume my controller is searching

Finally got it to work :)
With controller plugged in via usb.
Started connection with pc.
With active connection went into steam config.
There you can add and test a controller.
So clicked on add controller.
Then I unplugged the usb (controller shutdown)
hold X then hit steam button and it worked :)

So finally I'm able to use the controller on my pc and on my link without switching any usb adapters :D

Hi friend! Can you help me with your experience of using with link and pc? Using your advice I paired my Controller to link, then I put dongle to pc and started usng it on my PC! Meanwhile llink turned down and I couldn't turn it on - the only way is to put off dongle from pc and place it in link. But my pc is not far away from tv so I continue to use it on pc staying near the TV. Maybe there is an option to switch between two modes (wireless with link and pc with dongle)? not touching the dongle

you CAN connect to steam link without the dongle, im pretty sure that you switch the link on with usb joypad connected, then remove the joypad which brings up a prompt instructing that no joypad is detected and which buttons to press on the steam controller. However this will unpair the controller from the dongle, either/or not both unfortunately.

yes I can connect to steam link without the dongle, but if I want to use it on pc I should repeat the whole procedure again, It's bad(

You can pair the controller to the dongle and to the steam link together.
After you've paired to the steam link, you can reconnect to you pc dongle by shutting off the controller.
Then press a-button while powering up.

Controller then switches to the other pairing.

That way you can switch between pc and steam link.

Works like a charm for me :)

So plug the steam controller into the Link via USB cable.
Stream my computer via the steam link.
Add the controller in Steam, while it is plugged into the steam link.
Disconnect the controller from USB.

It should connect to the Steam Link without the dongle

Am I getting this right?

Well select the add controller.
Then disconnect the controller from usb.

After that:
hold X then hit steam button and it worked :)

Controller will go into pairing mode and since steam is also looking through the link for a new controller, this was working for me.

@kaasszje: Your approach described does not work here. Is your computer near your Steam Link? If so, it makes sense that it works in your case, since your controller does not pair with the Steam Link, but with the computer with the USB dongle. Can you make it work without the USB dongle plugged into your computer. No matter what I try, I can't pair my controller with the Steam Link without using the USB dongle.
