Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Bindings on Mac are incorrect
I'm running OSX 10.11.3 on the March 3rd Steam Beta Client. There are a number of issues with the keys, and I've tested them in the Minecraft client. The following keys are wrong:

  • Left Shift -> "APP" in minecraft
  • Left Control -> "NUMPADEQUALS" or just "=" in TextEdit
  • Left Alt -> "SECTION" in minecraft or "§" in TextEdit
  • Right Shift -> Doesn't trigger anything in minecraft, lowers the screen brightness
  • Right Control -> F16
  • Right Alt -> F13
  • Windows Key (which should map to "command") -> Does nothing at all
  • Volume Up -> F17
  • Volume Down -> F18
  • Mute -> F19
  • Play/Pause -> Nothing at all
  • Stop -> Nothing
  • Next Track -> Nothing
  • Previous Track -> Nothing
  • Insert -> turns my mouse into a question mark

This looks like there are pretty clear-cut mismatches between the driver and what the configuration software is aware of. Most of them are unimportant and included for completeness, but the shift, control, alt/option, and command keys are a must. With them not working, the steam controller is effectively broken on Mac.

Since you opened the file that contains the bindings in a text editor, think you can "make" your own with those fixes or will Steam override it with its official config?

Just asking; dont have a Mac.
Sorry for the confusion: I was just typing with the controller in text edit.

No doubt. To get minecraft on mac to work, for now you're going to need to reassign the shift / control /alt binds to real keys (not modifier keys) in Minecraft, then match them in a custom Steam config for your setup. It's what I did and it's working fine for me. Not easy to switch back to mouse + kbd though..

Otherwise, that config looks a little wack to me, anyway - what do those first three binds even DO? APP? SECTION? Right side modifier keys and audio controls in minecraft? Maybe try another bind file or make your own from scratch. Also, see the post on Analog Trigger assignments to get any config working in Mac right now.

Drizzt - Just found this through jtnix's Mac Known Issues collection post. I found mostly the same things as you did just with a different way to get there Instead of Minecraft I used the mac's virtual keyboard - Keyboard Viewer - along with the Key Codes app from the App Store. Im pretty sure my results are the same I just wanted to clarify a couple things:
  • RShift -> screen brightness down :: it actually triggers F14, which is tied to brightness down
  • Insert -> (?) cursor :: this is technically correct, it is because the Mac keyboard has a 'Help' key where Windows has the 'Insert' key
  • Windows -> nothing :: on desktop this seems to map to the power button! a short hold will put the computer to sleep, a long hold will bring up the shutdown options
  • LShift/LAlt -> APP/SECTION :: Not 100% sure what is going on here. LShift only generated a key code for me but hit no matching keys, while LAlt returned §. That symbol is made by option-6 with a keyboard so I assumed that was what the steam controller what making, but I just double checked it after seeing your post. It actually generates a different key code with the § as if it had its own key.
Heres jtnix's post btw: https://steamcommunity.com/app/353370/discussions/0/412449508288820106/
