Outer ring dead zone - Request
I like using the left touchpad with "Requires Click" set to off, so that instead of pressing the directional buttons, I can just tap them. The problem with that though, is that the pad is so close to the back button that any time I try to press the back button, some part of my thumb ends up touching the outside of the control pad and activating it.

Since it's possible to bind keystrokes to the so-called outer ring of the touchpad, I feel like it might be useful to create a deadzone along that outer ring, so as to limit interference with the back button.

B Button or Select?

I think that "back button" is the Select button for OP.
FredEffinChopin Feb 23, 2016 @ 8:22am
Yes, back button. Isn't that what it's called on the Steam Controller? The one that would be select on a PS1/2/3 controller, and that is "Back" on an XBox controller. It's hard to press it without making minor contact with the left touchpad. Not every time, but often enough that it makes using it with "requires click" off a hassle.

I agree with being allowed to do away with the unused outer region. We've complained about the dead edges on the trackpads and supposedly those were put in place to prevent what you're complaining about, but the current solution is a trillion times worse than your feature request. I like your idea. I only like moving my thumb as far as being able to feel the ridge at the top of the + anyway. Beyond that is unnecessary to me.

Please email this request to steamhardwarefeedback@valvesoftware.com with a link to this thread.

For you, i've used the outer region in games like Red Orchestra, Killing floor (inverted), Sven Coop (inverted), Synergy, and Dying Light. Taking that feature out will seriously hamper me, and others who use it.

If we were talking cars, this is what you would be saying right now, that if I had the right to remove a car seat from MY CAR, that it suddenly means nobody can have a car seat in THEIR CAR. Some of us would much prefer options, don't you agree?

Yeah, the statement wasn't that he agrees that we should do away with the outer region, but that we should be allowed to do so. We're talking about binding a deadzone to the outer ring instead of some other function, that's all.

Thanks for the suggestion/email, Styro, I will definitely send one over to them today.

Pretty sure there's an option called "invert deadzone" in the advanced options so that the deadzone will only be on the outside but I have not tested it
FredEffinChopin Feb 23, 2016 @ 11:47pm
The option is to invert the outer ring binding so that the outer ring becomes the control pad (or whatever the main left touchpad binding may be), and so that the inner ring uses the outer ring binding.

cant you use outer ring binding and bind it to the empty command?
Mooney May 25, 2020 @ 9:34am
That doesent get rid of the edge input. Tried mapping it to "something", it still goes full tilt whenever i barely touch the outside of the pad.
Which happens ALOT, since this thing clearly isnt designed with normal-sized hands in mind.

Please Valve, give us a outter deadzone that actually works!
Who thought it was a good idea to give us the option, and then have it do literally nothing?
If someone likes it that way, fine, let him define the deadzone accordingly.

Here is how you do it.

1. Add an action layer for the outer ring.
2. Outer ring binding applies Outer Ring action layer.
3. Set directional right pad binding to long press. Lower long press time to improve responsiveness.

In Outer Ring Action Layer
1. Directional pad right binding removes Outer Ring Action Layer

After that is set up, fine tune outer ring binding radius to account for where your thumb touches trackpad.

Here is an example I set up in Garry's Mod.

Appreciate the effort, but i dont understand either of those guides. :p
So, you have to map a key to "change action layer" and then have a basically empty action layer for the right touchpad?

Ive tried setting it up like in the linked example config, but it doesent seem to do anything.
