Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Not working with GTA V. Cannot move character, phone appears instead
I've been trying to get the steam controller going with GTA V for about 2 days now. I've searched online and found another person with the issue but his fix didn't work for me.

1) I have the new firmware
2) I'm running in big screen mode
3) I tried the "High precision aim" default setting (and everything else)

My Experience:

I'm able to use the controller in other games but in GTA V it is unusable . With GTA V the joystick doesn't move the character, unable to walk. What happens when you push the joystick is that the iFruit phone pops up. The iFruit phone pops up when press the directional pad as well. The steam menu (Big screen) doesn't pop up when I hit the Steam button on the controller like its supposed to. Instead, the screen pauses (not the pause menu, the screen freezes). When I hit the steam button again the game resumes.

I tried the default rock-star settings, a number of user settings, the "High Precision Aim" setting but the same issue. I tried rebooting my machine each time (IDK about 20 in total) after each change and not rebooting after each change. I tried selecting each config while in game and while not in the game (several times). When I returned to the game the same issue. I tried to change the joystick setting to "mouse" and every other selection they had listed.

I had the same issue but on one occasion, after several reboots and spending about 2 hours trying configs, rebooting my system, stopping and restarting the game. it worked. I'm used to pressing the right pad to see behind me in GTA V (The default) so I went into the config to change it. The steam Controller hasn't worked in GTA V since. Its back to not being able to move the character and having the ifruit phone pop up instead of movement. I tired everything all over again (reboots, game restarts, trying different configs, trying the default config) for about another 2 hours and decided to throw in the towel.

I'd say I spent about 4+ hours trying to get the controller working with GTA-V but was unable to do so. IDK? some folks are just lucky and have everything work perfect for them all the time (or some folks or just plain dishonest). I'm not one of them. I built my own water cooled Skylake computer this winter (have been building my own PC's since 1994). The skylake PC was also a nightmare but that's another story. I've been working in I.T for 20 years as a programmer and I still wasn't able to get the steam controller working with GTA V. lol!

I wanted to get away for from using a mouse and Keyboard. But for some reason I cannot get he steam controller working with my favorite game. This is really frustrating. I wasn't expecting a setup nightmare but here we have it. To say that I'm highly frustrated right now is an understatement.

I really want to get with Steam's living room vision of gaming. But do they think that the living-room gamer is willing to go through the hours that I went through trying to get a controller working with a very very popular game? They'll just pick up an Xbox controller and move on. And I'm a serious techie and having this amount of trouble with the steam controller. Regular users would'nt put themseleves through what I'm going through to get this thing going.

Thank you very much. Any help would be appreciated.

System Specs:

Asus Maximus VIII Z170 Board, i5 6600k,16 GB Hyper DDR-4 2400, AMD Radeon Fury (Latest Drivers}. Microsoft Xbox Controller (unplugged and turned off), Fanantec Porsche Wheel (turned off)

So the first step is to make sure the Steam overlay is working in game.

Set Steam to run as an Admin and whatever game you are playing.

From what I've read GTA5 is a hard game to setup because of the launcher

Thanks :) Much appreciated.

The Steam shortcut allowed the choice of "Admin", but the GTA icon appears to be a web link that didn't have the option to run as admin. I've been trying again for the last half hour or so and it worked on "Precision Aim" or whatever that setting is. Everything was perfect but I didn't like how the mouse look required me to keep swiping, I'm used to smooth look arounds. I went into the options to change it and now it isn't working again. The controller also doesn't work in either of the Metro games that I have as well as the imported into steam Crysis and BF4. Only game that works all the time with the controller is an old game Dead Island Riptide that I don't even play anymore. Oh yeah.... Grid Autosport works perfect, didn't even have to tweak or change anything. I was looking forward to using this with GTA V over the weekend but it appears to be a frustrating adventure. Here it is Sunday night and after at least 5 hours the steam controller doesn't work with a game that it says that it works with. More R&D (between Rockstar and Steam) was needed for this for sure. A controller should in no way be this difficult to setup. Or work every 12 attempts.

Oh yeah... I'd say that the steam overlay is working. I see the area for GTA V in big picture mode for GTA V show this bargraph animation after launching. Thanks again.

There's a known bug with the SteamController in GTAV, you have to spam the steam button couple of times to get focus back in game after using BPM overlay.

I was able to make a little progress last night. What I did was use the same GTA V game controller config for both the desktop configuration and the GTA V game controller config. This isn't really a solution because I'd have to switch the desktop config every time I play a different game. And it appears that the Game's configuration doesn't really do anything, or I'm not sure which configuration (Desktop or Game) had priority.

But there's more to it. I'd actually be somewhat satisfied with the configs working switching between games and such, but with any config in GTA -V, the right touch-pad doesn't auto-pan to the left. It works to the right but not the left. When you hold the right corner (or even the side) of the touchpad it auto-pans (goes in circles) all by itself. When I do the same thing on the left hand side of the touch pad it doesn't really move. Or if it does move it does so really slow. I find myself having to swipe to the right on the touchpad to change angles while I just have to touch and hold the right hand side to get it to do the same thing in the other direction. I don't really have any other games that allows you to pan like in GTA-V. So I'm not sure if this one is game specific. Anyone know of any cheap game on steam that auto-pans let me know? It would be interesting to see if this is a hardware issue. When I take GTA-V off full screen, and let the mouse move by itself by holding the touchpad, the mouse moves rapidly across the screen to the right when I hold the touchpad on the right, but slowly to the left.

I'm about ready to try to tackle this thing again. Any help would be appreciated. I really want to get this controller working but its proving to be difficult.

Thanks. I tried this but it just froze the screen, pressing the steam button again brings back activity. I only did it about 3 times. Might try it more times, what do I have to lose.

Any solution? This is the newest post I can find and all the I have read gave ideas but no solid solution. I tried all the ideas but no steam overlay and I can do everything in game but.... move my character...

Auto-Pan?
What you are talking about is the "Edgespin" function (mouselike joystick or mouse).
Yes , in GTA V left-Edgespin is slower and and seems to stutter, i have the same problem.

Edgespin doesn't work very well in GTA 5 for some reason.

It works in other games as intended and rather smoothly( i tested in the Q.U.B.E game ).

I recommend to pick up a community setting or the official rockstar setting.
Preferably a setup with mouselikejoystick if you don't want to deal with confusing buttonprompts.
And turn up the Sensitivity setting ingame(in GTA 5 controllersettings) so the mouselikejoystick works a bit better.

I don't know about the phone instead of moving part.
Sounds like the game or the SC is confused about the movement and DPAD (DPAD up is Phone).

Spamming the steam button is not a good idea imho.
If Steam doesn't react or goes into the configurator press B (or esc on keyboard) to cancel and press the steam button again.
The Steam button seems to be supported from GTA so it also pauses the game , if you spam it it will pause and start and pause..........

As a side note i would recommend to add an actionset with identical layout but joystickcam or joystick move on Righttrackpad so you can switch between both settings if you get annoyed by the joymouse or some puzzles midgame (yoga minigame).

This should only be done as a last resort, since it's a huge security vulnerability. Steam has a web browser, and running it as admin makes it much more vulnerable to malware.
