FIFA 16 No Longer Working Since Latest Controller Firmware/Steam Client Update
I had previously got my Steam Controller working with FIFA 16 using the guidance given on these forums (i.e. disable Origin in-game; close origin while adding FIFA 16 as non-Steam game in Steam etc), and I was very happy.

Since the latest firmware update/steam client update, the Steam controller will only use the default desktop layout on FIFA 16 (even if I successfully set my actual Desktop layout to 'Gamepad').

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so do you know how to fix this?
The best I have been able to do is to either one of these two outcomes:
- Turn on my old, wounded xbox controller, with my Steam controller desktop configuration set to 'gampad' to try and use the Steam Big Picture API as an xbox controller emulator. Steam controller was completely unresponsive, except that the paddles worked correctly in their mapping to 'D-pad up' and 'D-pad down'.

- Repeatedly open Steam Big Picture after FIFA 16 is running to configure FIFA controls to 'Gamepad'. I then selected the 'Resume Playing' option in Big Picture, which successfully mapped the controls to the Gamepad configuration . . . but all I could see was the Big Picture screensaver, and my controller input had no impact on the FIFA 16 application. Using 'Alt-tab' to switch to the FIFA 16 application resulted in the same, frustrating default desktop control scheme as before.

My xbox 360 controller took 5 years to wear out and need replacing. My Steam controller has taken 2 weeks to be even less usable - and all because of a firmware/software update!

I believe to get the SC to work as a gamepad with FIFA, FIFA has to be launched via BP...launching BP after FIFA has in my experience never worked because it's not overlaying it...because it didn't launch it.

The release notes from the latest Steam beta implies this doesn't need to happen any more, but it doesn't work for me. I noticed a new checkbox in BP mode for the FIFA shortcut related to desktop config. All I can suggest is you flip the state of that checkbox and try again.

My FIFA doesn't work at all at the moment. It's hit and miss and I gave up trying to make it work a while ago. Just gonna use DS4 controller with InputMapper for now, maybe the SC and BP stuff will be sorted in a few months or something.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

It is odd that the previous advice was that fifa needed to be launched from BP; my Steam controller worked all the same whether I opened it from BP or not.

I haven't found the new checkbox in BP for FIFA shortcut related to desktop config - perhaps I have not opted into the latest Beta version, or that Beta is yet to be rolled out where I am.

I have tinkered with this problem for a while tonight (another few hours!), but still haven't fixed this.

BP is correctly applying my 'FIFA16' configuration once I start the game, but only in the time between when I press launch, and when the game actually launches. Once the game is open, the controller response is consistent with the default desktop configuration, and FIFA recognises this input as keyboard + mouse.
Oddly when I set my desktop configuration to mimic my 'FIFA16' controller config, the controller responds appropriately, and definitely behaves as a controller configuration while FIFA 16 is open . . . Except that FIFA 16 does not seem to recognise any inputs from the controller.

I am absolutely at my wit's end with this Steam controller.
If I were to add up all the time I have spent trying to fix this issue and charge Valve at my usual overtime rate at work I could have made enough money to buy a few Steam controllers by now!

I feel your pain, I've invested a lot of time too. For example, FIFA demo worked, bought the full game, still worked, then one day it broke. No apparent reason. I faffed about a *lot* to no avail. Then I upgraded my WIndows 7 OS to Windows 10 (had been planning on doing that anyway) and after that, FIFA just worked.

A week later, it stopped working again.

In between the upgrade, I even tried the controller on another PC that I installed FIFA on too. It worked. I can see no rhyme or reason to it short of something I've installed clashing with it.

Due to a mistake on my part I've two Steam controllers. Neither of them work, so at least via process of elimination it might be safe to say it's something on my PC (possibly Steam).

The next thing I was planning to try to fix it is uninstalling and reinstalling Steam, but at this point I don't have the energy and am lucky enough to have a PS4 controller I can use. At some point when I'm desperate enough to play FIFA via home streaming, I'll try again. Until then...

Yeah forgot to mention - I'm using Steam beta and SC beta. The new checkbox appeared two days ago after the latest Steam beta update.

That said, with the exception of the FIFA issues, I really like the controller - really neat piece of kit. Just needs mature software to go with it.

I have the same problem for over 2 months. Whatever I do it doesnt work, but atleast now when I run FIFA 16 controller works as mouse+keyboard, but not as gamepad. Before that the controller was absolutely without response. I have steam beta, origin is turned off when I start the game, origin overlay is also off. I dont know what else to do except steam/origin reinstall but I dont have the time or the energy for doing that. Help anybody please?

I tried uninstalling then reinstalling Steam. Doesn't fix the problem. Kind of annoying that the Steam uninstaller decided to uninstall my games libraries too so I cancelled the process half way through. Still had to install Steam afterwards so I think the uninstall worked as required.

Adding the games back is a one-game-at-a-time process, so don't do it unless you are prepared for that, or research how not to lose the game manifests when you uninstall. Not that it helped either way.
