Steam controller overrides custom settings
Hello, I own several Steam Controllers and lately one of them got a button busted so I bought a new second-hand controller. It came without a dongle but that is fine since I have two dungles from my previous controllers.
I am able to pair the new controller to the dongle but when I start my game (Black Desert) it overwrites the controller configuration I made with the default configuration. If I try to manually change it to my own configuration, it will immediately change it back to the default configutation. It only happens with the new controller, the old ones work properly.
I noticed the new controller had the prod firmware so I tried to update it to the ble firmware, but when I do that, I am not able to pair the controller to the dongle. In addition, the controller does not go into bluetooth mode, so I think the firmware installation is failing or something.
I tried to manually move the new firmware from one of my good controllers to the new one, this time the bluetooth mode does work but again I am unable to pair the controller to the dongle.
I am only able to pair the controller to the dongle if I install the old prod firmware but then the controller configuration does not work.
I tested connecting the new controller to both my dongles and the issue persists on both.
I'm not sure what could be the issue here since my old controllers work properly (but have some busted buttons which is why I bought the new one).

I'm not exactly sure, but the controller may have been linked to another Steam account and may be trying to pull their config (or lack thereof) as for how to unbind it, I don't know how with the new Big Picture mode/Steam Input

Ooooh ok, I didn't know the controllers link to accounts. I'll try and find a way to unbind it. Thanks!!!

Well, Steam support is terrible, they have not answered any of the questions I sent them in the tickets when they reply, nor have they addressed anything I mention in the issue description...
So, does anyone here know how to unbind a controller to an account?

They have answered me with this:

Hello,

I'm sorry for the delay getting back to you.

We've reported this issue to our developers. Controller registration has been removed but should not interfere with your ability to use supported features of the controller and Steam.

We don't have an ETA on a fix for these issues, but software updates are expected in the near future.

Seems we are not going to register em soon...

Hi! I have exactly the same problem and also contacted support while I'm waiting for a response. User settings were also not configured, I updated the firmware to ble and now the dongle does not work. Or maybe someone has a link to the firmware without ble working, but to work with dongle?

This method helped me. Install the old version of steam with the controller "configurator" still working. There I was able to successfully reset my controller to factory settings and install the latest firmware, which helped to "chip away" my steam controller. After that, it works PERFECTLY in the latest version of steam. Finally, even the management settings are successfully updated and dont reset anymore.

It helped me a lot. I leave a link to the manual:

For some reason, my comment yesterday did not go to you. I apologize.

1) Unzip the archive downloaded from the manual that I shared.
2) Be sure to close your current steam.
3) From the unpacked archive, launch steam and follow the usual login procedure.
4) Then go to the settings and select "controller". Next, click on the "general controller settings" button. You should have a separate window-the gamepad configurator. After that, connect your controller via a USB cable. He should check in your list of controllers and there you can interact with him.

If for some reason you are unable to launch old steam from an unzipped folder, try deleting your downloaded steam completely. But I've tried it several times and I assure you, if you do it right, then it shouldn't be necessary. Just make sure that it is completely closed before opening old steam.

An important point. After you complete everything (it is advisable to reset your controller to factory settings, then install the latest firmware, as well as bind a usb dongle if you have one), you can safely use the current steam, it should work without complaints. But be sure to delete the steam shortcut on the desktop and create a new shortcut from the folder of your current version of steam. Because the steam shortcut is updated to the latest version of the running steam.

For your convenience, I tried to record a screen recording, to be honest, I'm not a pro at this, but I hope it helps you! I hope you will succeed! I will be glad to help, write if anything.
