It does nothing unfortunately. Steam button flashes for around 30 seconds. Button "Start" beside "Pair a Steam Controller" changes to "Confirm Paired Devices" but nothing happens.
A switches to dongle mode, X pairs with a new wireless reciever (i guess if it's not the original that came with the controller), but won't actually switch to the dongle mode. You have to restart the controller with guide+A for it to actually switch to dongle mode if it's not in it even after pairing with X.
B is bluetooth mode, Y isbluetooth pairing.

Looks like my information is out of date. Check out Vepar's link. Hopefully, that will help.
Using "Connect to a Steam Controller" I pressed the Steam + X button and the controller connected, but only for 2 or 3 menu moves and then turned off.
I repeated this and the Steam button just glows without any response
I'm stuck trying to update the firmware on mine. No longer built into current Steam, regardless of BPM or Beta. Trying to find a way to either load an old version of BPM or find another way to force firmware update on controller.
I downoaded Steam_Controller_FW_Update_Tool.zip from the link https://steamcommunity.com/app/353370/discussions/2/3811782223867788231/, connected the controller using usb cable, open a terminal as administrator, navigate de the extracted files, launched the .\ble.bat, script launched the .\post.bat script, go to steam settings >> controller, clicked the [Start] button on Pair a Steam Controller line, while holding [Steam]+[A] btn on the controller, clicked [Confirm Paried Device], disconnnected the cable, done. I'm not sure what was the important things in all that random things.
