Steam Controller

Is really worth it?
I need a controller to play on my PC when I play in my living room while its being stream to my ipad (I have app that allows me to stream my pc to my ipad) so do you think this is a better alternative to my wireless xbox 360 controller?I am use to using a mouse and keyboard. I believe I would play causual games with it. The reason I ask is because I have a CS GO knife that I can sell for about $100 and the controller is about $58 with shipping and tax. I could sell it and buy the controller and still have some spare change. Do you think its worth it to sell my CS GO knife to buy it in my situation.

I believe I will get it then. What type of game genre would you recommed?
Are FPS,Racing, fighting games good with this controller?
I wouldn't recommend multiplayer FPS at first, I find Portal 2 is a good game to use it with, as it's single player and you can get accustomed to FPS controls in a casual environment, plus Portal 2 has native SC support, meaning it has a default config as well as SC button prompts rather than KB/M or Xbox prompts.

The official Portal 2 configuration has a ridiculously high sensitivity by the way.

You can solve this by switching it to use Mouse instead of Camera.

As long as you can handle adjusting to a new style of controller, and don't mind tinkering with the settings it's definitely worth it.

Sorry, but I have to chime in on the weight thing. The SC is actually 10 grams heavier than an XBOX360 controller. The SC, unlike the XBOX, is balanced and all the weight is in the handles instead of in the middle or back of the controller like a XBOX controller. They did this so you can move it easily with that mechanical advantage when using the gyros. BTW, yes, I weighed it myself and compared directly to my late model 360 controller.

Super worth it though. I use my SC for literally everything now. No KB/M, no traditional controller os any kind, if I can't use my SC for some reason, I don't play it. It really is THAT good.

Just take your time with it, read the guides, and leverage the community with any questions or problems and you will be fine.

Literally everything? Even for typing those paragraphs?

I'm sorry? No typing is not workable with the SC but gaming, YES...

It takes a lot more effort to type with the SC, but short things like passwords are definitely still workable. Even short chat messages work. Although, I wish I could just have a voice to text option for my games. Text to voice works too. It's rather funny in Sanctum 2.

What I meant was that you said you used the SC for literally everything, so I was asking if you even used it to write your post. You don't like KB/M for gaming?

I find typing with the controller pretty comfortable. Compared to keyboard typing with an xbox controller on the couch, it no longer feels like a chore to try and write sentences longer then ''ok''

Yeah, it's definitely a step up compared to all other controllers I've tried. I'm so used to a keyboard that it feels real clunky right now though.

Not anymore! I use the SC exclusively nowadays.

That's cool. I love the Steam controller, but I'm just so much better with KB/M to make a full conversion.

Not to worry, you day will come when you look at your steam controller and realize you forgot you even had a KB/M or any other controller and you will just feel at home.

No, seriously tho. Not everyone can actually equal their skills with a KB/M with the SC. I have, and healthily surpassed them, but that doesn't have to be the case. I know quite a few people who have and I know still others who have been using it as long as I have and still seem to sit just shy of their KB/M skills. Nerve damage in both of my arms from an old injury might have something to do with it. For me, the sheer comfort the SC provides is MORE than enough to use it over any other input device for gaming. I don't lose feeling in my fingers and don't get numbness in my arms either. That alone may be the reason I can get better with it, I don't know. Needless to say, it IS possible to meet or even exceed a KB/M and even if you never do, we don't judge. :D

Yeah, I think if you're uncomfortable with using KB/M with due to an injury, and you can get just as good with an SC, then there's some nice benefits there.

You get extremely comfortable gaming, you can move the controller around a lot as you play, you don't have to be in a chair with your arms in the same place all the time. In your case, you're better with it than the KB/M, so it's a win-win.

And it's even got some features that KB/M doesn't have like an analog stick for certain games that can make use of it for movement or steering in a racing game, etc, you can use the gyro for cool and immersive actions like steering a car, or leaning your character in a game like Arma or CoD 4/5, and you can use the analog triggers for games that can make use of it for example firing a double action revolver and watching the cylinder turn and the hammer go down (not sure if any games actually have such an action) whereas the mouse is just a single fast click.

There are a lot of games that require or are simply much better with a gamepad, so you can play those with ease with the SC, and you can also play a lot of KB/M/Gamepad or just KB/M games with ease too. So overall it's a really solid and powerful device, as you obviously know.

For me, though, I'm too precise with a mouse to fully convert to the Steam Controller for my gaming needs. Every now and then I bring it out to play an FPS if I want to train my aim with the SC, (which is weird since I'll never fully convert to the SC and I will rarely use it for online competitive FPS. I feel like I just want to prove that it's a capable device) and I'll more frequently bring it out to play games that are suitable for it, for example single-player games (I have a lot of fun playing the SC with singleplayer games. It just feels more immersive somehow) or games which are more suitable with the gamepad such as Jet Set Radio, or old games that I played on old consoles a long time ago that I want to relive the controller experience with, such as Half-Life 1, MDK2, Any worms games, (If only I had them on Steam) which all happen to be single player as well.

I think another thing that people, myself included, sometimes forget is the fact that Valve never made the steam controller to replace a KB/M or even any of the really good dual stick controllers we have all used for so many years. In the case of KB/M, most users will never truly go the SC way entirely and that is OK. When a traditional controller is involved, I think most if not all of us here can say we have switched to the SC entirely or if not, mostly. This is not something Valve really had in mind as they have said so in their own words at the recent GDC2016 and at the 2014 dev days event.

Personally, my specific issues meant that I could never really play for longer than an hour or so without having to completely stop playing with a KB/M. Games that had Xinput or even standard Dinput were much better for me but something in the design still caused problems after long binge gaming sessions. I can play games for hours and hours I could never hope to play for any real length of time since so many PC games, even today, still only support KB/M inputs.

Part of that mechanical advantage of the balance, never needing to push with any strength at all with the pads, and that rounded curve of the SCs main body gives me something, I don't know what, that no controller can, painless gaming.

I guess this is mostly the reason I have latched onto this thing with such fervor. I mean, I am so obsessive that PCGamer noticed and had me write an article for them, after all. Aside from that, I have friended or been friended by most of the regulars here on these forums. People friend me just to have me help them out a bit or be more detailed with certain things. I never once thought I would become, truly, a real fan of anything let alone a silly little piece of experimental tech from a first-time hardware manufacturer. It just fits my needs so perfectly and feels like it was made, from the ground up, with me personally in mind.

I like to say that I am a fan of nothing, at all. I enjoy watching StarTrek and have seen every episode of every series and every movie many times but I am no fan. I have watched every Star Wars in the theater and loved it but am no fan. The term fan is derived from the word fanatic which is literally "a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal". For the Steam Controller I am a fanatic and I think it shows. My love for this thing borders on madness but for me, it has been so long since I have found something truly comfortable. Not to mention the customization and such is icing on the cake.

In case you were wondering, my injury was when I was 7 years old, I walked off a curb at a TacoBell and caught my full weight on the palms of my hands. Took at least 2 months to regain feeling in most of my fingers and a month longer for the thumbs. Having been in professional electronics repair, it's kinda funny to think a guy with such a problem with his hands would decide to work with them for so many years. Such is life I guess. :)
