Struggling with gyro mouse for desktop
Hey folks,

Loving the steam controller here and I am trying to use it more for everyday desktop stuff in my lounge chair. I am getting really good with combining gyro and the right touchpad to precisely reach different elements on screen. The challenge is when I go to click on things by squeezing the right shoulder button, it almost always seems to cause the gamepad to move enough for the gyro to knock my cursor off of its intended target.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is the solution just more practice, or is there a configuration that avoids this? (E.g. clicking happens with something other than the trigger.)

Hope I have explained this OK - thanks!

You can set the click to whatever you want in the desktop configuration.

Thanks for the reply. Any recommendations about what to set that as?

I've personally never needed to use my controller for the desktop, nor the gyro, so I couldn't say first-hand what I'd use. You could probably use the back grips or one of the ABXY buttons. Or maybe even the bumper. Just try anything, really.

You can also set the option to dampen mouse input when the trigger is pressed. That way your mouse won't move as much/at all when you press the trigger. Don't know about the gyro though, but there should be an option for that too there (if the gyro is set to mouse).

It's under the advanced option.

I have been using Steam Controller with desktop (...in living room) since launch. It works well with proper settings.
  • Gyro on > mouse > Enable Right Pad Touch.
Sensitivity ~ 3 clicks from minimum.

  • M1 & M2 > Triggers
Soft Pull Action , Hair Trigger Style, Minimum Soft Pull point.

  • Right Trackpad > mouse
Sensitivity default, Trackball mode on, Friction Low, Friction Vertical Scale Max, Smoothing Max

Moving cursor with Trackball mode is easy and fine tuning is with Gyro. Raising thumb from Trackpad stops cursor moving when clicking triggers or any buttons.
One button is mapped for F11 when browsing.

Thanks - I tried the technique of taking my thumb off the right pad before clicking and it works like a charm.

I wonder how people manage this in FPS when aiming at a moving target with gyro and pulling the trigger? Must require a steady hand.
