[SOLVED] STEAM Controller not working well with Portal 2 [SOLVED]
I thought I'd post this issue to see if there are solutions or if anyone is having similar issues.
It seems that Portal 2 when being played with the STEAM Controller has some weird jitters and micro stuttering, there's some hitching as well.
I'm experienced in tweaking and my first thoughts were that it was a v-sync issue.
After testing I found that not to be the case.

I played with a wireless Xbox 360 controller and it was as smooth as glass, same with the mouse.
I attempted to turn all the smoothing up on the SC and got as far as I could in advanced/legacy settings.

Also I am confused by Portal 2's settings as they are bound to "Camera" and "Motion" instead of "Mouse" and the others, is this because the settings are changing or that VALVe can map the controls more directly to Portal 2 because they made it and it's DX?

So far the best experience on the STEAM controller is DOOM which pretty much runs flawlessly with some tweaks to the official SC profile from ID.

Thanks for the help.

I don't know the solution unfortunately, but yes, the reason why SC has bindings for "Camera" and "Motion" is because Portal 2 has native SC support, so it is perhaps communicating more directly to the game as you have said.

Portal 2 has native Steam controller support. "Camera" is just that, native way for the controller to pair with the game.

And yes, it's more sensitive than legacy mouse settings. Try putting sensitivity down or add some smoothing or whatever.

I have tried all of those, but I will continue to tweak. I have a feeling I may have to wait for a patch for either the game or the SC.
I wish there was a way to add the legacy mouse settings.

there is. press start and then change the style of input to mouse.

Just use the legacy mouse style of input. Works fine.

TF2 is a game which has native camera control, and it works perfectly.

Some games mess it up like Portal 2, and in this case you just use the "Mouse" style of input instead of "Camera"

Yeah you can use legacy settings with no problem. Warframe who also has native SC support uses legacy mouse instead of native options. Works better.

Interesting, I could simply not find the mouse setting in the dropdown list. I'll look again when I get home.

I think you have to press "back" button (select) or something to show legacy inputs.

I took a look at Portal 2 and have some suggestions before you start editing the config.

In Portal 2, go to the keyboard/mouse settings.
1. Turn mouse sensitivity all the way down.
2. Enable raw mouse input.
3. Disable acceleration.

Then go to configure controller.
1. Press start, then change style of input from camera to mouse.
2. Slide sensitivity to all the way to the right.
3. Acceleration off.
4. Trackball on, set to medium.
5. Increase smoothing.

That should get you fairly smooth mouse movement. If that's too slow or fast for you, then adjust acceleration or sensitivity settings to preference.

Well, all be darned. Guess trying to configure the STEAM controller at 3 AM after beers wasn't such a good idea. Thanks to all of you folks I found the damned legacy settings!. Could they be buried any deeper VALVe? Well I'm glad that using the mouse setting has completely fixed the issues. I'm just nervous that VALVe will take away those settings, the term legacy makes me leery.

special thanks @ ugafan for that specific info. That definitely helps

Have you found where most haptics bindings are hidden yet? :)

Yes. Now I'm researching the obscure settings, like yaw and edge ring or whatever. So many settings, the STEAM controller was made for a guy like me.
