Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Viewing configurations without buying a game.
It would be nice if we could see how well a game is supported by the controller before buying it. I can configure it myself of couse - but if I saw a clever setup I might be tempted to buy a game that I wasn't interested in beforehand.

Wow. I thought people choosing games by their taste of gameplay... You're opening my eyes.

Well, you are allowed to see community configurations for games that are added as a non-steam game. Try adding a "Steam Controller Configuration" named shortcut. Change it to the game you want to look at configurations for. I don't see why it wouldn't work. Make sure you rename it if you buy the game though. A shortcut that doesn't really do anything, but has the same name would get confusing. ;)

Not to be a party pooper here but this is probably best they don't add. Thing is, not all configs are created equal and you may see one that looks terrible but isn't the one you would use if you got the game.

I've been looking at Civ 6. If I bought it, I would be playing on a TV with a steam controller. It was been bundled with the controller at one point but there's no mention of support on the store page. So now I'm waiting for some imput from the forum. It would be nice if I could just get this info straight from the store.

Going through user configs is an excellent source of ideas, particularly when switching genres (I would have loved to see config ideas from assorted competitors like Torchlight before I gave up trying to set up something I liked for Titan Quest and uninstalled it. Your assertion that it would be bad if we can see more ideas is very strange. It's not like we're protected from bad configs with just our own libararies.

You are missing the point, that's ok tho. No skin off my back. They are redoing the whole system for community configs so when that drops it should make less of a problem. There is easily 90% terrible configs with bad design decisions incorporated into them. Not really a good place to get good ideas for configs IMO. One hope we do have is that they will make the system like the Workshop. This way, you could easily look up configs for a certain user or browse them, even if you don't own the game, with proper ratings and such. The way it is now, not so much.

Yeah, workshops FTW. That may intro custom icons into system, which is neat.

Someone can correct if I'm wrong; but I've found that most newer games don't need to say specifically whether it supports the SC or not. The controller can be made to work with almost anything, whether it be as a gamepad or with a KB/M config. Now, some developers do publish an 'official configuration' for it.

Long story short, I've been playing CivVI with some minor alterations to the official config and it's awesome.

I had no idea they were doing that! Any link to that sort of info regarding when it was announced or even, perhaps, estimates on when it's likely to be launched?

This. It would be amazing to see ratings and perhaps something like "users currently using this configuration", comments and all that jazz. It's certainly something to look for. :butterfly:

Naw, it was actually a footnote after the last big SC update about 3 weeks ago? They said that was the next big thing to tackle. It was only one sentence so we don't know anything about it, really. Thay are also adding the DS4 and a BUNCH of other features, I would expect it to be either November sometime or maybe a BIG Christmas update like they did last year.

"Next up we'll be looking at how community configurations are ranked and presented to users so the best configurations for you are easier to find. "

Thank you so much for the extremely helpful and quick response. I was a fool for not looking at the "news" tab up there when you mentioned it! I'll keep my eyes out for that from now on.

Let's cross all our fingers that you are indeed correct about some new things by Christmas, for we could certainly use the upgrade. :butterfly:

Yeah, no kidding. The community configs are so bad right now that I haven't used them but maybe a grand total of three or four times total since October 2015. This is one of the most sorely needed upgrades for the software right now. I, for one, can't wait to see how they rig this whole thing.

Well you can view the community configs without owning the game, but not the recommended configs. Just have some add some random non-steam game to your library, and rename it to a steam store ID. For example, if you rename a non-steam game to 440 (tf2's ID), you can view and download the community configs and see what they can offer.

Doesn't seem like worth the effort to investigate game so deeply before purchase but I guess some people need to be extremely thorough -.-

just need add button in steam store with info (how many custom configs for SC in game)
