Steam Controller

[SOLVED] Can the touch pad button press functionality for the PS5 DualSense Controller be changed to not require the touchpad to be touched to function?
So I learnt that in order for Steam controller config to recognize a touch pad button press on a DualSense Controller, you have to be touching the touch pad too.

The reason how I know that is because I recently installed the eXtremeRate Rise 4 remappable back buttons to remap the touch pad button press functionality to one of the back paddles for the Gyro off. Reason for that is that the touch pad placement is way too far for my fingers to comfortable press/touch them and thus wanted a way to easily press them.

However, after installing the kit, and remapping the touch pad button to a paddle, I tested it out on Apex Legends and the back paddles doesn't seem to work, even though the actual touch pad buttons work.

So I went to https://gamepad-tester.com to check if the controller buttons are working properly and imagine my surprise when my back paddle shows the touch pad button when pressed.

I went back to Apex Legends and tried a few things and finally found that when I press the back paddle that was remapped to touch pad button AND touched the touch pad, the Gyro turned off.

So TL;DR, the touch pad button press functionality in Steam Controller Config for the DualSense Controller requires you to be touching the touch pad in order for the actual button press to work .

For most cases, that would be no problem as you need to be touching the touch pad in order to press the touch pad button. But if you have installed a custom back button and try to remap the touch pad button to them, it will not work.

I hope Valve would consider "fixing" this as the upcoming DualSense Edge has back buttons and I would assume that people will try to map the touch pad button to the back buttons in the controller.

EDIT: Was wondering why is there only Right Pad Press and Left Pad Press options for pressing the Touch Pad but no Whole Pad Press option for gyro enable button binding when there is a Right Pad Touch/Left Pad Touch/Whole Pad Touch option for touching. Shouldn't a Whole Pad Press option where it just takes Right Pad Press /Left Pad Press as the same button input remove the need to touch the pad?

UPDATE: I managed to get it working. Here's how:

First off, I went and made the touch pad to be a unified touch pad and set the touch action to be empty.

I then created an Action Layer that assigned the Gyro Enable Button to a button that we will never use and to turn Gyro on when the button is pressed. In my case, I use the Mute button. This is to turn the Gyro off when the Action Layer is Held.

Finally I went back to the unified touch pad and assigned the newly created Action layer to the touch pad click function as a Hold Function and now my back paddle remapped to be the touch pad click button functions as a Gyro off button.

With that said, I learnt a few things from this issue.
1. If the touch pad is functioning as a split pad, the touch pad press function for both Right and Left pad requires a touch to activate.
2. If the touch pad is functioning as an Unified pad, you DO NOT require a touch to activate touch pad press.
3. There isn't a whole touch pad press option for the gyro enable button when in my opinion, there should be one as it would immediately solve this issue and the next issue.
4. This only works if you have Gyro always on and want a remapped back paddle to turn gyro off when pressed down.
If you want Gyro to turn on when the remapped back paddle is pressed down, there isn't a way I know of due to the fact that Steam doesn't allow you to make an Action Layer with Gyro Enable Button set to Gyro Always On when the default action set Gyro Enable Button is mapped to a physical button.
THIS IS EASILY SOLVED BY HAVING A WHOLE TOUCH PAD PRESS OPTION FOR GYRO ENABLE BUTTON.

unfortunately ps5 controller is based on ps4 functionality at this time. early model ps4 controllers only had one button for the entire touchpad, which means that touch is required to tell which side you are pressing on. I dont know if this is still the case for PS5 controllers, but the ground work is still based on one button.
note: even if the PS5 controller has two buttons for the pad, they could functionally act as one.

Can you just set the touchpad to being permanently 'touched' as a workaround?

Wait you can do that? Anyway, why isn't there a selection for Whole Touchpad click in gyro enable button dropdown where it ignores touch and clicking either right or left pad button activates the function?

The little infinity symbol above the d-pad controls on the left side.

I've tried it but it does not allow for the binding of touching the touchpad, only regular gamepad buttons.
