Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Controller settings needs more.
This controller has/had a lot of potential, but currently the settings are messy and lack depth. This might also be relevant for the steam deck as well, but I don't have one yet.

  • For the gyro aim, there's a setting for having both yaw and roll for x-axis movement. However, you can not invert the roll or the yaw individually, so this setting is useless because the multi-axial movement currently counteracts itself. If you move around a lot like me, this can make having single axis steering feel unintuitive.

  • Trackball friction should be a slider instead of a drop-down. It has turned quite a bit of people I know away from this amazing device because low friction was too slippery and medium was too stiff.

  • There should be a way to test the inputs inside of the controller settings so you don't have to pause, open overlay, open settings every time you're fine tuning something like triggers, trackpad sensitivity, etc.

  • Some features like the touch menus only work in big picture mode. If I'm using this controller when I'm at my desk, big picture doesn't feel practical to use. Another thing to note is that if you don't have big picture on, opening controller settings opens a new window, and not all games can safely be tabbed out.

  • Directional swipes could also use fleshing out. I want to have trackball camera, but also have it so I can flick stick by swiping across the entire pad. I have no means of doing this so far. It's probably not realistic, but it would be nice if I could assign specific motions on the pads, but currently it's limited to cardinal directions.

  • The haptics and the speaker are underutilized because there isn't an easy way to configure them. Audio and tactile feedback go a long way to making controls feel more intuitive.

  • Kind of a pipe dream, but maybe workshop/mod support for controllers? It would be interesting to see what kind of weird things people come up with.

Steam Deck allows you to enter values as well as use a slider, so that should be in the Big Picture update that is eventually coming.

Running SteamOS makes it so you are basically always in Big Picture mode, and adjusting controls and swapping back to the game is quick. Steam Deck feels like an evolution of what is currently offered on a Windows PC.

That's good to hear, though I won't be able to get one until Q3. Hopefully you'll be able to use some features on pc without big picture in the future.

It's a shame because Jibb Smart's default implementation of Yaw + Roll Steering Axis (and World Space orientation used in Splatoon) uses the normal direction for Yaw and inverted for Roll. But regardless of the input type in BPM, it's impossible to choose which controller axis to invert, only the cumulative x or y axis output.

The setting as-is is playable, but not in the Player Space intuition that Jibb uses this. Instead, I need to think, "If I lean right, my camera will turn right," instead of the lean acting as a counter to the Yaw when the controller pitches back or forward far.
