Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Does BLE mean I can finally pair my SC with Nvidia Shield without having to jump through hoops!?!??
Short Answer: Not yet?
Longer Answer: Firmware update went smoothly. Paired with shield just fine. Mouse cursor is responsive and Right trigger selects things like on PC. But that's it. No other buttons work at all. Not sure if this is a SC problem or an Nvidia problem. I get that they're competing products but............????

You probably need the Steam Link App to be made available ?
This should then apply the android equivalent of lizard mode bindings (think Valve are calling this Guest nowadays) and then once you are streaming and logged into steam client you get full scapi support, global chord bindings and desktop bindings etc

The SC requires Steam to work. Without it, it reverts to lizard mode, which is exactly what you experienced, some mouse control, but thats about it.

The update was never to make the SC a universal blue tooth control. The update was in preparation for the Steam Link app coming to mobile devices late this month, so the SC can be supported too.

I'm really looking forward to comparing nvidia gamestream side by side with steam ihs

Ahh you are spot on Yamatori

Lizard mode is the driver level mode and guest account bindings can only get applied after SC finds steam client or in this case steam link app for android

Seeing better Shield Controller support for Steam Input would be cool, it pretty FUBAR since January this year. Very unpredictable. Dpad not being mapped/working, not being detected for registered account to apply user account bindings properly etc etc etc

This because Valve adding support for non steamvr tracked controllers to steamvr, Nintendo switch and lots of other things.

Does the SC work in steamvr yet?

The Steam controller doesn't act like a controller when connected to anything but Steam. It's programmed to work like a mouse if Steam isn't detected.

There's a steam app for shield though already

It must be said the steam app for gamestream is slick as and works really well remote streamed and locally on Shield devices.

Virtualhere android server and windows client can be used to make steam controller work in steam games when it is connected to SATV/Shield Tablet

I have not tried IHS for a long time, and my SCs have been collecting dust for a long time. Last time I used SC was when I was trying to use gyro/motion controls to act as head tracker so I can experience race sims on flat panel screen siimilar to vr experience, I.e. camera mouse mapped to gyro

Steam Input adding support for other controllers so that they can use the same GUI for remapping controller as SC 2orks amazingly well with Shield Controller. Though it must be said Steam Input has been extremely buggy since at least early this year in both stable and beta branches of steam client. For everybody.

Valve making the announcement about Steam Link App for Android has me very interested in SC again. The provision of this software version of link for android and iOS users is very intriguing. It proves the Steam Universe is expanding.

I can also see with the rise of GPU Computing bringing huge leaps in making the what has been long conßidered impossible possible.

vGPU can now be used to run apps like Disneys Star wars demo, which was demos showing a local workstation with eight quadro discrete GPUs all working together through SLI to run ultra photo realistic vr experience

This app could be run by one Tesla V100 GPU Accelerator and be made available to consumers thanks to vGPUs and GRID technologies.

It is historical fact that Nvidia and Valve have collaborated on many things including gamestream, IHS, Steam Machines, steam app for shield, vrworks, steamvr and GFN

GTC has historically all been about AI and ML but Nvidia just teased an unscheduled GTC Taiwan and are teasing "the ultimate gaming experience" is on the agenda.

This blog post from earlier in the year confirms how Tesla V100 GPU Accelerators can do HPC tasks beyond what any high powered local PC can do and illustrate that these things are not just for training virtual bots in NGC for ML and AI tasks.

https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2018/03/27/live-gpu-migration-virtualization/

So vGPUs running state of the art photo realistic XR content delivered through PaaS to consumers as SaaS being delivered from the cloud to anything with an internet connection and display, really would be a game changer.

This makes the Steam Link App very interesting.

So no way to use it as a controller with games that support controllers on Android!
Balderick May 13, 2018 @ 6:04pm
I'm not sure tbh but Shield controller works in android as android controller and in windows as Xbox controller when connected to SATV wirelessly so I do not see how or why Steam Controller could not do this too.

GFE installed in windows is what provides wireless shield controller drivers for windows so shield users can use their shield controllers as if they were connected to windows PC

Steam Input makes the Shield Controller work in all PC games and when it just works, is uber slick.

There is probably a way you can add your àndroid game to steam library as non steam game so you can launch it through steam runtime to then use shield controller with it.

That might be a cool way to use your vive for daydream apps?

It would be cool if the controller remapping tool on Shield Tablet could apply configs to Steam Controller!
