Prior to my reinstall on Windows, steam and windows seen it as a xbox 1 controller.
Edit: it is Wireless and connected Via USB.
I'm assuming (because you didn't tell me the exact one) it's the ESM-9100 series. Looking at their websites, they're meant to be used on Windows, PS3 and Android, so they're likely X-input controllers that can't work on Nintendo Switch. So Steam's incorrectly assumed the wrong 3rd party controller type.
In Big Picture Mode, go to the Settings cogwheel, Controller Configuration, then under your detected controller, try to remap the buttons. Change one of them, apply the settings, and then `ON THE SECOND DROP-DOWN MENU, CHANGE IT TO XBOX 360 CONTROLLER`.
If you can't remap the buttons at all, then Steam's confident that you have a 1st party Nintendo-ish controller, which is incorrect, as this is a third party PS3 controller. Clarify the model number, and we might need to know the USB-interface code for Steam to recognize it properly in the future...
Haven't really touched steam since my post on here, and just decided to give it a go.
However, I did try and map it, but it's only giving me option to map it to the keyboard.
I don't exactly understand it properly. I click on what it see's as "Y" and it only gives me keyboard alternatives to change it.
After messing around, uninstalling random USB devices. I believe my controller was one of them, as I uninstalled steam, a bunch of USB devices. Reinstalled controller, and then reinstalled steam. It now registers it as an Xbox one controller.
I can't quite say what caused it, but probably some issue upon initial installation.
The problem was that the controller uses a 2.4ghz dongle but instead connected to another bluetooth dongle connected to the pc.
FIXED the issue by removing the bluetooth dongle and reconnect the controller to the according 2.4ghz dongle.
Hope this helps
