About the Xbox buttons XYAB
I think this must change, Xbox could claim it's a copy of their product.
If there's a Steam Controller 2, I'd like it replaced with another joystick, perhaps, and at least two controllers next to each trackpad.

I also noticed that the trackpad ignores finger taps next to these buttons, I assume this is to prevent accidental "clicks".

Well, it's just an idea, considering that if it had two sticks Sony could also claim it's a copy of their Dual Shock controller as well... :/

But that's not gonna happen I believe.
XYBA is a wise decision, however, for games that supports xbox pads, it shows it's prompts that prevent confusion for a lot of SC users.
Don't worry about copyrights. Valve corp lawyers aren't stupid I guess.

Also, SC isn't the only controller with those face buttons and Microsoft doesn't have copyright on the letters... By that logic Nintendo should sue Microsoft because they had A and B buttons first...

What kind dumb thread is this? Many third-party controllers use ABXY layout and Nintendo pretty much "owns" the said layout albeit inverted (look up SNES).

By your logic, Microsoft would have sue Valve at the very beginning of the launch of the controller. Those third-party controllers won't stand a chance either.

BTW, Dreamcast controller is the first one uses the layout we know today. Maybe Sega should do the lawsuit instead.

it's annoying that they swapped nintendo's layout. everything is backwards when i play steam link with a wii u pro.

if i designed a controller, i would name the buttons like a compass. NESW.

Maybe Nintendo already patented BAYX along with the dpad.

That would be cool but wouldn't play very well internationally; you'd have to sell it with different labels in every region.

I think the GameCube had the best design — kidney-shaped buttons circling around a big red main button, each one pointing a different direction. You can tell just by looking at the shape of the prompt which one to press and don't have to memorize or even pay attention to the label. If I were making my own system and didn't have to match the prompts already given by the games (as Valve did), that's how I'd design it.

its green :P and that only goes for 2 buttons, a and b are both circles

If only we're still stuck with 6 face buttons like Sega Genesis and N64. Damn you, Sony!
