i'd say the only downside is if you typically use the dpad to steer. the left trackpad can be used as a dpad, but it's not quite the same as a 360 dpad.

My driving improved by uncalculable amounts once I got used to gyro steering. There's so much more subtle control than on a stick. I'd even hazard to say, that apart from having to hold the pad in the air, it's as good as any bog-standard racing wheel would be.
It's also great in Grid Autosport.
edit: when it works of course. right now, it's broken.
