Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Controller Not Detected
Just like a few other peeps, my controller will not connect like a controller through Steam but still works as a mouse. However, the current solutions I am finding are not working for me such as deleting certain drivers/programs. Here's what I got that might cause a conflict:

- Red Dragon gaming mouse with its drivers.

- Gyazo as my screenshot tool and recently came with a game capture tool.

- My AMD driver also comes with a game capture tool, but it is disabled.

- Windows 10 being arrogant with its drivers. When my controller is plugged in wirelessly, it comes up as the Steam Controller. Wired, it comes up as a generic wired controller. The icon for the controller is a keyboard.

- My Bluetooth dongle I use for my headphones and VR controllers.

- I am hoping this one is not causing the issue, but I do have a Huion drawing tablet installed.

Here's a pic of my Steam controller as seen in the device manager when I sort the devices by container: https://i.gyazo.com/f803f8b8f0b682e95c91b5d8ec8aa585.png

I hope to get this fixed soon.

Did you try holding Steam Button + A while powering it on? Hold A then press the Steam button.

According to THIS that's how you switch to dongle mode. Maybe it will help somehow? Maybe it's using bluetooth and your dongle isn't seeing it somehow or there's errors with the connection so steam can't see it. Try running it in native dongle mode and see if it works.

Also, here's a video on how to pair it, but if there's no add controller button, then i don't know what that's about. There should always be an add controller option regardless of wether you have a controller paired or not. If there's none, that could be an issue with Steam itself and you'll have to contact Steam support to solve that one (and i recommend you do), because only Valve can help you with their own software, nothing i can do about it if a Steam feature is missing.

Is your steam client in family view mode by chance? Cause that can and will limit what you can do.

is a list of known programs that interfere with Steam controller. See if you have anything like that installed.

That's all i can think of for now. I have to go to sleep now, but write if it worked or not. I'll check tomorrow.

Yeah, no something is wrong in terms of steam/software. Nothing is wrong with the hardware and no i'm not doing anything weird as i have connected to to other PC without a single problem.

I've done everything listed and more.. and nothing has worked, i tried to get some steam support but its been 3 days and i have not gotten a reply back. :steamfacepalm:

Hmm, then your only option is to contact support. It sometimes takes a while dor support to respond. With all the backlash they got with canceling steam controller orders and whatnkt, they probably have a huge backlog to go througj and respond. Give it some time.

Good luck!

Steam support responded, sadly it did not help. BUT! After reinstalling windows 10 my controller works perfectly fine with this PC.

Is reinstalling windows the only option available? We practically have the same problem, when I temporarily installed a redragon mouse software while my steelseries was being replaced. After removing the redragon software, my controller is behaving exactly like yours did, all buttons and trackpad responds but the BPM Settings ->Controller settings no longer show the "Add Controller" button.

Not sure, but it quite possibly could be your best bet. Try to make sure it's nothing else first, use a fresh windows install as a last resort. It just so happens to be extremely easy for me since I needed to reinstall anyways.

Same problem, and I use razer mouse, too. Don't want to reinstall windows... T.T

I had the same problem. Here's how it got fixed.
I entered "Big Picture Mode"
Clicked the gear icon for settings at the top right of the screen
In one of the "Controller" menu items (I think it was "Controller Settings") I notice at the bottom of the screen an option that said something like "Unhide Controller".
Clicked on it. Problem solved.

I don't know how the controller was hidden. I recently installed Citrix, Microsoft Teams, One drive and some other software so I could work from home.

Hope this helps.

I didn't have that option, but hopefully if others do that will fix it. It is still a mystery to me why it didn't work. But reinstalling windows 10 at-least fixed it.

I have fixed it for a while.
It seems that the driver of Razer is hard to remove completely, but once you delete it all, everything will be OK.

My OS is Win10, I don't know if the English name of these settings are correct, you guys can have a try:
控制面板control panel->设备和打印机devices and printers->right click on “steam controller”->properties->hardware->scroll down and you will find a lot of Razer things, double click to enter their properties->change settings->驱动程序drivers->卸载设备remove device(uninstall device?)->do this until all the Razer things are uninstalled->right click on steam controller->remove device->unplug your steam controller and then plug it in.
Open your steam controller settings, it's back.

Hey everyone. So I was having this issue as well. I bought my controller back in like 2016 and maybe used it a handful of times. I just bought Monster Hunter: World on steam and wanted to use my controller since I originally owned the game on my PS4. I went through all of these things, minus the Razer as I gave up on them years ago, and looked into maybe my Logitech affecting it. No go there. So I just got tired of the issue, and plugged it in manually. I think after uninstalling the driver(s), a few popped up for it, and going to BSM it popped up with add controller, similar to the above comment. I played around with adding a new controller and followed the steps, no go there. So I decided that I was just going to plug it in and play that way if it worked. So it worked and then I just decided to look at my controller and see if I could do a FW update through that, there was after it finished updating I could use the BT with it again. I think that if you can get your controller to at least show up while wired and do the FW update it may help. I hope something works for the rest of you, just wanted to share what worked for me.

:helping: tyvm sir. Was lucky to find your post early because this would've been really frustrating.

In that menu, 'Unhide Controller' appeared at the very bottom-center of the screen next to 'Back', in the context of menu navigation... not along with the other options on the left-hand side.

•Looks like it might show up only if the controller you're troubleshooting is plugged in/connected.

I've no idea how this got toggled, but hopefully it doesn't have a dedicated binding. In my case the SC worked fine but at least one of my generic wired logitech controllers stopped showing up and was unable to navigate BigPic mode even though windows picked it up..

I finally figured out what was causing my issues. I had the same problem for weeks and was pulling out hair thinking my SC was dying, but it turns out that the "Virtual HID Minidriver Collection" was installed wrong somehow.

To fix it I,

  1. Went to device manager and looked under "GSPY Device" with my SC unplugged. If you see a Virtual HID Minidriver Collection already, disable it temporarily so you know which is which.
  2. Plug in your SC using micro usb and refresh the device manager. A new Virtual HID Minidriver Collection should appear.
  3. Right click>uninstall device, and when prompted if you want to delete the drivers, click yes
  4. Unplug the SC, and re plug back in. Steam should reinstall the correct drivers and recognize the SC
Hopefully this helps anyone in the future who has similar issues, since the SC isn't in production anymore, us users gotta help each other out! :cozybethesda:
*EDIT: You may also have to repeat the process when connecting via dongle as well, just uninstall any HID Minidriver collections that pop up and you're good to go
