This having been said, which was entirely necessary to point out in my opinion... A 360 stick will fit with a little sandpaper modification if you feel you need to replace it. I guess you could also just top it with one of those stick toppers. My son prefers it with the topper and I can't stand it so that's kind of personal preference.
But TristanMike, you say, I said they were worn down, well, as I said so were my 360 controller sticks, and to be honest, they floated a lot and by themselves weren't very good. Some gorilla glue and weight on it for a day and they're perfect. I'll admit that it took a couple of attempts because actually the glue let go the first few times. It did end up working very well in the end and now all my controllers have these little pads on them.

Obviously, overkill but it proves my point. Especially if you can handle using a screwdriver it's a very simple thing to do. Less than 15 minutes and you can have the sticks replaced. Now, if you are talking about drift, then that is not so easy as that and might take an extra 5 minutes and requires a soldering iron. You also would have to have some idea what you are doing, though that kind of project is a very good "my first soldering job" sort of thing as it is among the most simple things you can do.
OP was asking explicitly about the plastic stick top so that's a little out of scope here. Use of those stick covers should be because of preference regardless if the stick is in good condition or not. I've met many people who would rather buy a new controller outright than use one because they just don't like it, so it's by far not an actual solution to the issue at hand. Though, if toppers work for you, more power to ya.

iFixit Steam Controller Teardown
The part that you touch isn't. It's a plastic cap that's placed on a shaft using a friction fit. If you can open the controller and not damage anything, it's doable.
