Anyone having issues with the Desktop Configuration for Steam Controller Loading indefinitely?
I can't seem to configure it. I've restarted my computer, reinstalled the firmware, restarted Steam. No dice. Anyone find a solution?

Exit Steam

Try going to your Steam Application Folder,
Go to "Controller_base",
and erase "steamdesktop.vdf",
Relaunch Steam to see if that fixes the issue.

Just did that and restarted Steam. It just updated Steam and it's still loading. The other configurations (Big Picture and Chord) works fine. Could I possibly manually configure it in the steamdesktop file through Notepad?

Looking at the file, yes; as long as you know what you're doing.

Just tried it and everytime I restart Steam, it replaces the new file I created with the original one. I guess I can't do it this way by manually altering the file. Any other solutions?

You were only able to edit that file manually for the first few days back in OCT 2015 before there was an editor in there for the desktop configs. If you feel you must manually edit something you should instead copy the edited file into the templates directory. From there, you can then just load the template. Honestly, if you can't edit desktop configs I would venture you may have a damaged install of Steam on your hands. It's very easy to redo it without deleting your game library. Just delete everything except the game library folder and reinstall Steam itself.

I keep my Steam library on a separate drive so it makes this as easy as adding the library folder back in the settings and all games will then show up again. You may want to move the folder to another directory, uninstall steam entirely and then reinstall it. If that doesn't work then it's a bug somewhere. IIRC, there was a desktop config issue that was fixed somewhat recently so make sure to try opting into the beta client if you aren't or opt out if you are and retest.

Good Luck!

Trying changing it and making the file 'Read Only'.

Hey so wouldn't reinstalling Steam just pull the configs from the cloud? Wouldn't the problem still persist since I'm guessing every time I modify the files, it's being replaced by what's saved in the cloud? I'll try it anyway because I don't have much of a choice but it seems like it wouldn't help either way.

I'll try that but I think it's replacing the file entirely so whatever I do to the file in it's current state, it will be replaced by the file from the Steam cloud.

What? Who cares if it pulls them down, just load the default template and its wiped. You really shouldn't care what config is there right now because you are having a severe failure of the Steam app itself that needs to be sorted before you should even think of what config is on there. Once it's fixed you can make the config whatever the heck you want, or nothing at all. I don't know about you but I would think an entirely broken install is the first thing to fix.

I think you misunderstand. I had the Steam controller set up and configured on a different PC, which works perfectly fine. Downloading Steam on a SEPARATE OTHER PC downloaded all my saves AND configs from my Steam cloud (from the old PC) and populated it on the newer PC. Unless you have some way of modifying/wiping the cloud I'm not sure there's any way to "load the default template." If you know of a way, please do tell.

Yeah, there is a list of templates where you would select to configure the controller. So going back to the default is easy as pie. Just hit X at the controller config and on the left you can see an option for recommended configs and that is where you can apply the default config. The problem here is if you genuinely can not configure the controller at all, then there is a greater issue you are having right now that needs to be handled first. If it is just a matter of you not knowing how to load the default again, well, here are some pics of the process.

https://postimg.cc/gallery/2tgkdn5sg/

  1. GO into BPM and select the gear icon at the top right of the screen.
  2. Select base configuration under the controller heading
  3. select desktop configurations
  4. Press X to browse configs
  5. The default basic config will be under the recommended heading.

This is the normal process, if this is not working then you have a completely different issue here that needs to be fixed. No amount of fiddling will allow you to configure the controller if you cannot go through these steps. SO don't even bother with deleting files or whatever because that doesn't fix the underlying issue. If you had it set up before on another PC, you should have lead with that instead of just saying it loads forever. Without any good information, no one will be able to help you with your problem. Try this and let me know exactly where it fails and what it does.

Hey, so I reinstalled steam but it seems like I can't get desktop configuration to work either. Big picture and other stuff woks fine. But when I try to launch Desktop Configuration it is stuck in endless loading screen:

I have also disconnected xbox 360 controller "just in case".

Yeah, if that's the case, may want to go and make a proper bug report post in the bug report section of the forum. Not sure if it would be a Steam server issue or if it is a genuine bug with the client but either way, it should be reported.

I just picked up a Steam Controller, and I am having this same issue. Enless loading screens for the above mentioned desktop config and also I cannot load any community controller mappings

Steam support suggests to log into another account and save the configuration locally, then try to relog into their on account. They said they are having issues with the serverconnections at the moment and are working on a fix

I guess that answers it then, good to know.
