Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Mouse emulation freezes when in a UAC prompt
Running Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview 17692 (RS5 branch), x64 edition.
I started a game that needed installation of redist packages, and as such Steam needed admin privileges. The controller could not move the cursor while the UAC prompt was active.

Yeah, that'll happen. Generally it'll drop to lizard mode automatically when the computer switches to admin, but when Steam itself is the thing trying to elevate it understandably can't do anything, including releasing its hold on the controller. If you hold the Steam button for a bit or pop out a battery to turn it off starting it back up it'll be in lizard mode and work, or running Steam as admin will solve some issues but potentially start some others

Pretty much, though recently, it has worked properly for the first time in a long time, at least for me. I have been using the latest beta though so your mileage may vary.

Weird, on the latest beta I connected my controller prior to launching a game that required admin privileges to update and I was able to point to and click on the Yes button just fine.
Still running Windows 10 17692 for a couple more hours, as I await the latest build (17704) to be ready for install.

Always had this problem and just assumed it was unavoidable. Not heard of lizard mode nor popping out a battery to get past the can't click uac dialog.

Always have to pop into the other room and click with the actual mouse.

Will try this battery thing as well as check whether I'm running Steam as administrator next time.

Am using steam link and big picture. Problem occurs with hardware steam link and steam link app on Samsung TV.

Lizard mode is the super basic unchangable config that runs when Steam isn't hooking, named for the phrase lizard brain which refers to the part thought to control super basic stuff like fightt or flight reflex. If you're connected through a Linkk that likely won't work in that case, I'm not sure that would ever go to lizard mode, and the server computer would always see it as an emulated device coming from the Steam process
