Steam Controller

Steam Controller not recognised when connected through wire
So this is really weird.

My Steam Controller works perfectly when I connect it to the USB dongle. It's connected and it works, but since my batteries are empty I really want to use tthe controller through a USB cable.

The problem is that Steam doesn't recognise the controller when connected. When I plug in the controller, the steam logo lights up, but when Big Picture mode and settings, it says that there are no controllers are connected.

No inputs are regognised either. It just lights up and does nothing

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Have you tried a different USB cable?

I have tried about 5 different cables, all of them in different ports.

4 of them did nothing at all, because they weren't data cables probably. This one was the only one that mad ethe controller turn on and light up.

Even if they're just power cables, the Steam Controller should still light up.

Does Windows recognize the Steam Controller as any sort of device?

Nope not even that/ I checked Device Manager and plugged in orunplugged didn't add or remove any devices.

I've seen a lot of posts like yours. Here and in /r/SteamController. I'm not sure if some SCs are just really picky about cables, if it's their USB port that's the problem, or if there are a lot of people out there with crappy USB cables, but something is causing a fair number of problems like this.

Visually check the USB port on your controller, see if there are any signs of corrosion or dirt. Keep trying more USB cables, especially if you have one you know to be of high quality. Or open a ticket with Steam support, I guess.

I think it's a little of both. I have a good 5 cables from different brands and they are all data capable and work great with phones and other controllers. 3 of them work but two of them don't. One of the cables that don't work well I can make work by physically pushing the connector slightly tighter in the port. Just so you know I essentially never use the cable for my SC except on FW updates so the port has been used maybe a handful of times in its life meaning the port itself is fine. the cable the SC comes with, however, is SUPER tight in any other device I have used it with. This implies that the tolerances for the port are very tight and have less wiggle room than what a cheap cable can handle.

I don't have proof but it makes sense given what I have seen from myself personally and from others on these forums over the years.

Wow, thanks. I too have a few micro USB cables, all of which work fine for data/charging/other controllers, etc. But, I plowed through and tried all of them. 2 work, and about 6 of them don't.
