Steam Controller

Any way to bind specific joystick axis to buttons or other functions?
EDIT: OMG, I just discovered that if you use the keyboard arrow keys or the joystick to select the functions you can indeed select directions on the joystick o_o
Why I cannot select them with the mouse??? I can select any direction of the D-Pad with the mouse. This is so silly. I will just leave this here in case it helps anyone.

In general, I find the lack of direction binding very frustrating. Why I cannot set up the B button as UP in the joystick for example? (even if it's only digital) Seems something even basic emulators let you do, but I cannot find how to do it in the Steam Controller. Maybe I'm missing something.

Specifically, I want to try binding the joysticks left and right function to the rotatory mode of the trackpad (like the default function when you browse a website, that's binded to the mouse wheel). This could potentially be very useful to racing games. You rotate your finger over the trackpad clockwise to go right and counterclockwise to go left, all with analog support.
Funny enough, I can bind this function to any button, even the left joystick click itself or even to take a screenshot, as stupid as that is, but not to the X axis, which would be way more interesting.

Scrollwheel?

Select scrollwheel -> clockwise binding ->select mousewheel up (show activators if you want autofire on/off or change the repeatrate)

Mousewheels are not analog by the way it just send up or down repeatedly depending how fast you scroll.

For gaming:
Something similar has been tested by existential egg:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys3YfTXEhug

It is not exactly the wheelmovement like on a carwheel but he uses the y-axis of the trackpad instead of the joystick.

So far there is no way you can wrap a single analog axis along the circumference of the trackpads.
Only digital inputs are posssible for the scrollwheel function.

Maybe in a future update there will be a possible way to select single analog axis for the joystick/trackpad and put that around the outer ring.

It would be great for racing games.
It could potentially open up the possible use of putting 3 axis on a trackpad:
Pitch and yaw in the center and roll as analog outer ring.
Might be usefull for 6-dof games.

Thanks! I will check if I can do something with the activators (I didn't tought of that).
I actually tried the X-axis of the trackpad for steering and is a decent solution, you are able to mantain a direction quite well.

Have you thought of using the gryo to steer with? Set the gyro to Joystick Move, horizontal only and you can tilt the controller left/right to move along the analog x-axis, not unlike physically turning a steering while (while using the triggers for throttle/brake and paddles to select gears).

It was my first configuration, but I wanted to try different stuff. In the end I went back to gyro. It works very well if the games has a lot of settings, but can be a problem with some games that have too many driving aids when you use a joystick.

It's too bad there is no way to bind a specific button or function to specific +/- directions of any axis or vice versa but keeping analog function.
