The controller use to be available at many different stores, such as Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop, etc … but sometimes last year all those stores stop selling the controller.
Now, the only way to obtain a decently priced Steam Controller is directly from Steam themselves. I hate this. When my old Steam Controller broke, I just walk inside of my nearest GameStop and grabbed a fresh new one at retail price. Now, if I want a new Steam Controller, I have to either purchase one from Steam which is a TWO week delivery turnaround or some Amazon Seller at double (sometimes triple) the price.
For a multi-BILLION dollar corporation, this isn't a good look for Steam in 2019 (and beyond)
And I would happily pay it, if I knew the money was going to Valve and not some third party.
The lack of communication is the worst part. I just want to buy your ♥♥♥♥!
Looking around, the only ones available in my region (Australia) are on amazon and ebay, and are selling for absolutely ludicrous prices - $800 or so - which is insane. This money is purely scalping and I refuse to support the cretins who do this.
I really wish Valve would either produce another run of these, or at the very least open source them so that another company can fill demand.
Releasing CAD files is not the same as open sourcing the product.
With the CAD designs we can easily create accessories, etc, but Valve are still the sole owners of the IP behind the steam controller, so I cannot simply create my own one and sell it.
I am not a lawyer, but that's how I understand the situation.
Can someone suggest a good one from Amazon?
Thanks.
The Xbox One controller is significantly better than the 360 one (if even just for the MUCH better dpad, the one on the 360 is very squishy and awful) and can still be quite cheap. Also the x360 controller doesn't work with bluetooth, only the Xbox One controller does (and even then, you need the second gen one with the matte finish at the top, rather than the glossy part around the xbox logo)
But honestly I would recommend a Dualshock 4, although it is mostly personal preference. The touchpad and gyro can both make for some nice functions, which could help you out in an RPG depending on the game. I could imagine you using something like a touch bar menu, which you wouldn't be able to do with a Microsoft controller. That said, the DS4 is notably painful to setup, especially on Windows
