Steam Controller configuration for non-steam games
*NOTE*
I originally posted this on the Suggestions/Ideas forum. A user suggested I post this here for further community discussion.
*********

I'm a big fan of the Steam Controller. What I'm not a fan of is how incredibly convoluted it is to import configurations for non-steam games. I have a lot of games from other services, mostly GOG, and it's just a royal PITA to import configs.

I'm suggesting that Steam introduce a way to "bind" non-steam games to their steam equivalent to assist importing community configurations OR create an import interface that makes it simple and intuitive to import configs downloaded from 3rd party sites. At the moment, you have to go and save a personal config for a game and then go find it's file (which often requires opening it in notepad because the filename gives no indication as to which profile is which) and then replacing that file with the config you downloaded elsewhere.

At the moment, importing 3rd party configurations is just a ridiculously absurd workaround for a feature that should be built in to the UI. There's really no reason that the this feature is still missing; it has been 2 years. Please, Valve, create an intuitive way for users to manage, import and export Steam Controller configs! And give us a desktop interface as well. Forcing the Big Picture controller ui when accessing it in desktop mode is just a poor design decision.

If the game you're adding can be bought on steam you can just:
  • Change the name of the shortcut to the AppID on steam

E.g. Torchlight 2 has AppId 200710, so rename the shortcut to that, and you will find controller configurations for that game.

Hi I don't fully follow how to change the shortcut with AppID, could you elaborate a little bit please?

Right click on shortcut (in Steam), Properties, Change the Name to AppID.

In the case of Torchlight 2, change that to 200710, then you can browser for controller configurations like normal.

AppID for a game can be found by searching the Steam store, you can see it in the URL when on the specific games page.

this does not work for me. naming the game as the AppID just makes the game not launch whatsoever now

This is great! Was able to get community configurations for RDR2!

You can sometimes find configs from other people who added the game by naming it exactly as Steam would have normally have it listed in your library, but that can be a real crapshoot more often than not and you can find yourself renaming the title all kinds of different ways to eventually maybe finding one or two community configs.

Simply naming the game to its AppID really helps solve that problem and you can rename back to normal once you find a config you like. So thank you for pointing this out, you really saved me a headache.

You can search the ID of every Steam game in steamdb.info, even for games no longer available in the shop. After you bind any controller config to the game you can change the name back to the original name for easier access in your library. Done this with Celeste from the drm free itch.io Ukraine bundle.

edit: oops, didn't read the post above mine XD
