As far as general advice about using the SC or making your own configs, maybe even just discussing possible novel configuration techniques, this is actually the right place to be. We try to help as much here as we can so if you have any question, problem, or just general advice, just pop on and don't be a stranger!
It can do a lot of things with it so play with other peoples profiles (learn from them) then start to make your own. After you get used to the Left control pad for movement you will even give up on the control stick.
I hated this thing when I got it, and I got tired of it sitting around so I wanted to give it a 2nd chance before I put it on EBay and the more I mess with it the more I like it. You can make it do about anything.
As for profiles right click the title and then edit steam controller. From there you can download or make your own. You can also add a NonSteam game and find profiles for them waiting for you.

1: Plugging in thinking all is done, that it works like a normal controller.
2: Loading the first custom profile then not liking it/the steam controller.
Good catch Hulken, I like that one.
Sometimes, sometimes not. For a great many games, the base templates are pretty good, or at least a good place to start from and tweak to your satisfaction. Other times there are really clever and useful custom configs. Sometimes a custom config can be too specific to its creator's preferences, or too different from your own (or occasionally just outright broken/stupid). Though I tend to start from a template or a good custom profile rather than from scratch, I usually tweak and tailor my configs to such a degree that I'm not confidant they would appeal to others, so I don't often upload them.
My suggestion, try whatever basic template fits your game first (9 times out of 10 if there isn't an official config from the devs Steam will choose the right default template for the game instead), and maybe play around with tweaking it if there's things you don't like about it. Then have a look at some of the custom configs for the same game, see if you can understand what they're doing and why, try out any you like the look of.
What game/games are you looking forward to trying out?
Thank you!
I have owned and configured my SC since its release in 2015 but by watching someone else shown of his config just yesterday I actually learned new "stuff". That's why I think it's good to be able to do your own configuration but don't be afraid of checking others out.
What I learnt was that the right trackpad that I use for mouse+click action I actually could modeshift on right pad click and swap it to a directional input, thus adding me a total of 5 button/actions without having to move my thumb :) really useful for weapon switching in Wolfenstein the new blood (and probably many more games).
