Custom profiles?
New pad here tomorrow.. Is there a popular forum or site with custom profiles made by uses?

I'm guessing user profiles are much better than standard?

It all actually depends really. Generally, I prefer to make my own since they are, in my one opinion, not up to my own standards. That having been said, all the community configs are actually built into Steam itself so you can get those for any game that already has one, even non-Steam games.

As far as general advice about using the SC or making your own configs, maybe even just discussing possible novel configuration techniques, this is actually the right place to be. We try to help as much here as we can so if you have any question, problem, or just general advice, just pop on and don't be a stranger! :steamhappy:

I have had mine since relase but just stated messing with it the last month or so. It is different and takes time to get used to BUT keep messing with it, you will like it more and more. I have been playing BF3 with mouse and keyboard and last night I downloaded a user profile and the sc and it worked nice. Gyro aim is great.

It can do a lot of things with it so play with other peoples profiles (learn from them) then start to make your own. After you get used to the Left control pad for movement you will even give up on the control stick.

I hated this thing when I got it, and I got tired of it sitting around so I wanted to give it a 2nd chance before I put it on EBay and the more I mess with it the more I like it. You can make it do about anything.

As for profiles right click the title and then edit steam controller. From there you can download or make your own. You can also add a NonSteam game and find profiles for them waiting for you.

My tip is learn to do a profile yourself before looking to custom profiles to help you learn new ways to use the steam controller. I have watched to many new users fail/dislike the steam controller just by

1: Plugging in thinking all is done, that it works like a normal controller.
2: Loading the first custom profile then not liking it/the steam controller.

That is perfectly reasonable. Us old timers had to learn the hard way because there weren't any community configs back then and I think it really does help you think of thing differently. There are so many really awesome things you can do that a normal controller just can't manage and you would be missing out unless you experiment. Besides, I think the community configs are all done too quickly be people who don't really have that great a knowledge of the config software so they miss some awesome opportunities.

Good catch Hulken, I like that one.

Sometimes, sometimes not. For a great many games, the base templates are pretty good, or at least a good place to start from and tweak to your satisfaction. Other times there are really clever and useful custom configs. Sometimes a custom config can be too specific to its creator's preferences, or too different from your own (or occasionally just outright broken/stupid). Though I tend to start from a template or a good custom profile rather than from scratch, I usually tweak and tailor my configs to such a degree that I'm not confidant they would appeal to others, so I don't often upload them.

My suggestion, try whatever basic template fits your game first (9 times out of 10 if there isn't an official config from the devs Steam will choose the right default template for the game instead), and maybe play around with tweaking it if there's things you don't like about it. Then have a look at some of the custom configs for the same game, see if you can understand what they're doing and why, try out any you like the look of.

What game/games are you looking forward to trying out?

Try the 'Gamepad with precision camera' template as a starting point then. It uses gamepad controls but the trackpad and gyro for mouse aim. It's possible the game won't like trying to use gamepad and mouse controls simultaneously, in which case there's a wasd+mouse template to use instead, maps the analog stick onto wasd keyboard keys.

Thank you!

I have owned and configured my SC since its release in 2015 but by watching someone else shown of his config just yesterday I actually learned new "stuff". That's why I think it's good to be able to do your own configuration but don't be afraid of checking others out.

What I learnt was that the right trackpad that I use for mouse+click action I actually could modeshift on right pad click and swap it to a directional input, thus adding me a total of 5 button/actions without having to move my thumb :) really useful for weapon switching in Wolfenstein the new blood (and probably many more games).

LOL, I did that exact same thing with a few classic shooters, the ones with 1-0 specific weapons and not custom weapon switch menus. left and right were cycling forward and backward while up was to switch right to the weapon with infinite ammo and down was my favorite weapon. Too many awesome things you can do there, like single button press switching minion types in overlord, that was a pain to time those activators but worth every minute configuring it to do so. :)
