Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Button Stuck need help fixing.
So the A butoon on the face of the steam controller has seemingly lost its "spring" as it were. It doesnt click when you press it aka it just seems constantly pushed in, but its not stuck as you can pull it out just fine, it just flops back down, again. Do i need to take it apart and replace the springs in the button, does it even have springs?

It has a membrane like a keyboard does. The A button part probably separated from the rest of the membrane. Make a support ticket and they'll replace your controller or if you're handy you can probably get them to send you a replacement button membrane.

This isn't avisable in most cases but, touch your tongue to your finger and rub what little saliva gathered on it around your A button. Depress the button and see if that fixed it.
If that doesn't work, look up a teardown guide on the steam controller (I prefer IFixIt https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Steam+Controller+Teardown/52578 ) and attempt to reseat your A button.

Excuse me for wondering, is it sort of a shamanic technique? :)

It's a trick that has served me well all the way from the PS1! Haha, so in it's own way, yes.

Instead of spit, use rubbing alcohol. I also use a toothbrush to really get in there and scrub around the buttons. This works about 60% of the time and if not, a full teardown cleaning is the only other way.

Woah, old school people.

I think lab scientists everywhere would agree alcohol is better than spit at cleaning things. :P Though, as a cammel I do have a rather large supply of spit so maybe I should start using that to save on water while doing laundry or dishes. LOL

My controller is over a year old now, do you reckon they will still replace it?

What would cleaning it achieve could it ask? the button isnt so much stuck as its unable to be pressed, loose would probably be a more accurate assesment of whats wrong with the button.

@Divine_Rainor Because stuck buttons are usually dirty buttons. Even that way you describe, it still could be some schmutz getting in there and making the membrane stick, I have seen it before. I owned and ran my own video game store for 7 years and I think I may have seen essentially everything that can go wrong with a controller at some point or another. :D

Also, no, after a year you are outside of your warranty but you never know. You may as well just try and see if they will do it anyway.

Thanks for tips! I used a toothbrush and alcohol to clean Y button. It is working great now. :)

That's good to hear. IF it gets really really bad, sometimes the sticky will come back after the alcohol dries and the controller has sat for a bit. In that case, you would have to do a full tear down cleaning. Try and remember that preventative cleaning is always the best way to keep that sort of thing from becoming a problem. Too many people forget to clean the things they touch every day on a regular basis. We don't even realize how nasty our seemingly clean hands can be. :)
