Steam Controller

Steam Controller

Steam Controller turns on for a few seconds then off again.
Hi, i've got a really frustrating issue, my steam controller works fine wired, but with the wireless usb dongle in my pc the steam logo flashes for a few seconds then turns off again. Sometimes it will stay on for a few seconds but then just randomly die before i can even load up a game.

I've searched through the forums and tried a number of things:

New batteries
Different USB port
Holding X and Steam Logo in Big Picture Mode
Holding A and Steam Logo to calibrate the controller to the receiver

I've also read that the controller comes up such as a Razer/Steel Series/Logitech driver, so I plugged in and removed the usb dongle to see what comes up and disappears in the drivers. Turns out theres an HID Keyboard Device and an HID Compliant Mouse. As well as these, there are other drivers that disappear when the dongle is taken out like HID Compliant Vendor Defined Device and USB Input Device under the Human Interface Devices. And under Universal Serial Bus Controllers there is one that comes up as USB Composite Device.

I've tried uninstalling all these drivers that seem to be linked to the Steam Controller and then unplugging the dongle, restarting steam and trying to hold X and power it on in big picture mode, but it's still all the same... I'm running out of fixes from the forums to try, so please help :(

Two questions:

When the controller turn off does it beep? If there is no beep and there are also no haptics when you move your finger around on the trackpad then it's likely on extrememly low batteries. Try putting in a new pair.

When you are holding X + Steam button have you pressed the "Add a controller" button under "controller settings"? If you hanve't paired to a new dongle you shouldn't need to do this step.

Got brand new batteries and yeah it makes those sounds indeed.

About the Add a controller... it's weird because sometimes it detects it and sometimes it doesn't. I've already paired it before and configured it. So when it doesn't detect it I tried adding a new one again but it didn't seem to work.

I'm having he same issues. Worked wired. Not wireless. Blinks and disconnects and never bothers to pair

I had this issue a while back. I changed usb port for my sc receiver then paired it and that fixed it for me

You need a software update for your controller to be able using it wireless.
Do the update wired it takes few minutes !

I had the same issue a couple minutes ago, I found it odd it was doing the blinking light thing but I changed the batteries but it was still doing it. I was wondering if it had trouble finding the USB receiver so I unpluged that and plugged it back in while it was flashing and it connected again.

Same, the issue started when I unplugged the receiver and moved it to another port after doing pc maintenance.

After having issues I moved the receive to a different usb port and it resolved the issue. Not sure if it actually mattered that it was moved or if it was simple the unplug/plug.

Regardless, moving to a different usb port solved my problem.

by 'new reciever' you mean on the controller end on the dongle on the pc end?

the dongle for the pc. thats what solved my issue

well thats not nearly as bad, turns out i lucked out and tis just a software issue on steams end (supposed fix in beta). something to do with auto timeout, fix in meantime as i dont wanna run the beta is hold the steam button forces it to wait longer befor turning off and bypasses it.
