Assigned buttons not working, other unexpected actions
hi,

Ive been having issues with the steam controller lately in different games, also in games ive already set up and used the steam controller with in the past with no problems.

i would have the joy set to directional keys but one direction does not work then put those same settings on the left touch bad and they work. another game the joy is set the same but when i press joy left it works as the left directional command but also activates the cancel button.

Also there have been windows and applications that when focused the steam controller becomes unresponsive and wont do anything.

Anyone experience this or think i should contact steam support about this issue?

Some of that sounds like an issue that pops up when running Steam in administrator mode. Try making sure that you aren't doing that when you launch the Steam client. Also, this might be game specific issues, so it might be best to list which games have which issues.

Thanks for that info,

I set up the steam controller for battlerite when i first started playing, i havent tried using the steam controller for battlerite in a long while but it doesnt work at all now in battlerite.

There are various windows that when focussed the steam controller becomes unresponsive like the 'user account control' window that pops up before running some programs, but wierd thing is its not all of those 'user account control' pop ups make my steam controller unresponsive.

ill list more later

I don't have battlerite, and the SC normally becomes unresponsive when you have Windows ask you to do stuff, so that's not surprising. It's part of the way Windows works with certain stuff besides keyboard and mice.

yes i thought too; I know windows makes you use the mouse for decisions like that for security reasons so to make sure someone isnt trying to control your computer remotely.

Windows is usually consistent with this so why would my steam controller work let me use it to make a change on some pop ups and not work on some other of the same type of pop up?

Any programs i find that i think are behaving improperly with the steam controller ill just edit and add to this list:

OBS Studio - the streaming software, Steam controller becomes unresponsive when i put OBS Studio window in focus.

Ultimate doom - left and right joy works but not up and down, all other buttons seem to work normaly in game

Neverwinter - After I first got the steam controller set up with neverwinter long time ago that almost all i used for neverwinter but now it becomes inoperable for the neverwinter game and the launcher when they come into focus.

I really don't know. As for OBS Studio, and battlerite, are they on Microsoft's own store for Windows? If I'm remembering right some of the stuff from their little app store, or maybe even all of it just won't work with the SC. Certain Halo games, and other stuff sold exclusively through that just won't work right.

no OBS is an open source program for streaming to twitch.com or youtube or other places, battlerite is found on steam.

The only windows store apps i have downloaded is Figure, DuoLingo, and Groovemusic and my steam controller works in all those apps.

Just added Neverwinter to the list; i reciently contacted support about an error i was getting preventing the game from loading and they told me they know and i have to wait for a fix.

So I searched online and found a fix by making the game exe run in compatability mode for Vista SP2 and i specifically remember also making the game run as administrator.

So I decided to take administrator privileges away again and now the steam controller works fine with Neverwinter...

I dont remember this ever happening before and i usually make a lot of programs run as administrator, must have been a recient change with windows...

So now what can the solution be to this for the steam controller, steam find a way to make their controller recognized by windows as an administrator approved device?

You can try running the Steam client in administrator, but that will cause unusual issues in some games. Some games will just never work, like Rust due to it's anticheat thinking the SC is a hack of some kind, and Prince of Persia(the one released during Xbox 360's life) which just won't even launch if the controller is plugged in.

yea i was just talking to someone about that but, thanks ill keep that in mind.

I've been having similar problems with the only two games I've used with the Steam Controller. The analog stick moves but it's also some how mapped to the left trackpad/d pad.

For example in The Witcher 3, the D Pad by default can select weapons. If I move the analog stick, Geralt pulls out a sword or drinks a potion.

This kind of weirdness was also happening in DooM (the old one).

Then the Steam Controller just flat out stopped functioning with Wolfenstein New Order. I tried different batteries but still no luck. I am not running Steam in administrator mode.

Running steam as administrator fixed some of my issues with the controller just not working when some windows are focused but hasnt fixed the issue with some buttons working and others not when i try to play the old doom.

With FFVII left joy is set to left directional but used to also activate the cancel button causing it to back out of some menus, but that issue has stopped since ive started playing around and switching steam in and out of administrator mode. im just leaving it in admin mode now untill i notice problems.
