Double-tap trigger bindings?
Hello!

I'm a newbie to the steam controller, but so far I'm really enjoying the process of adjusting to it. I use controllers because my wrist disagrees vehemently with keyboards, so I'm quite excited to delve into making some configurations for my K+M only games. Unfortunately, I've hit a snag, and I'm hoping someone can help me with it.

Currently I'm trying to create a configuration for FFXIV that works for me. My hope was that I could set the soft-pull triggers for a single tap, and the full-pull triggers for a double tap of the same trigger to pull up the W-Crossbar. The multiple buttons option works perfectly in the game for the LT+RT hotbars, but I can't set two of the same button. I've tried the Double Press activator, and three separate activators of press-release-press, and neither seems to work to pull up the W-hotbar. Does anyone happen to have any tips for getting a double-tap to work? It seems like the double press should have accomplished what I was looking for, but it seemed to do...nothing. Perhaps I need to try reupdating my firmware.

I'm hoping I'm just making a rookie mistake, and someone out there with more wisdom can help me out!

cammelspit - Yes, I'm absolutely positive I disabled the analog. I checked and triple checked the settings to make sure everything was right, and it was working in other games. I even got some "automated" parkour going in Warframe with the exact method you described. I also thought I might not be pressing fast enough, so I tried setting the sot pull button to something completely different (I was working on RT at the time, so I set it to LT) and never had that pull engage. And if the haptic feedback (I turned it on for what I hoped would be some help in diagnosing the problem) is anything to go by, the controller is indeed trying to input two distinct presses.

The thing of it is, it seems to be the hotbar system itself that's messing up the input, not the controller or steam. Even with my A button (which has no analog option that I could find?) experimenting, binding RT to the A button the input did not work. I haven't tried binding the RT full pull to double click A, but I don't really see the point of doing it.

All in all though, even if no one with a more solid answer as to why this doesn't seem to work with FFXIV or a different method that works better for the game, I have still learned a lot of useful information. I'm certainly feeling much more confident in setting up this controller than I did when I made my first post! What a way to learn. Trial by fire it seems xD

Lol, you have pretty much nailed it on the head here when it comes to the Steam Controller. For those who can't or won't configure the controller or learn how it's just a typical gamepad with a strange as hell layout and touch pads. BUT! In the hands of someone who is both willing and able to really dive deep and see what they can do with it, the Steam Controller can be an insanely powerful tool for doing some INSANE stuff that would make your head swim.

Personally, I find exploring the configurator, coming up with new and novel ways to do things to be quite therapeutic. How do I relieve stress after one of THOS days? I configure the Steam Controller to do something most people would think is silly. Hell, I even played for almost eight hours of The Witcher using a pad only southpaw config and I am right handed. Why? Because someone said the steam controller wasn't able to be used by lefties and I took it as a challenge.

I always say to people, new users especially, the BEST way to get into the Steam Controller, I mean REALLY get into it, is to just dive right in head first right off a blind sheer cliff and hope for the best. I was actually just playing poly bridge with my Steam Controller a few minutes ago. That this even has an official SC config for it but I couldn't just leave well enough alone. No, I had to make a radial menu on the analog stick to have every single KB shortcut in the game, add gyro mouse for those pesky pixel accurate vertices and I am still thinking I can do more to make playing the game smoother. I can honestly say that I have likely spent nearly as much if not more time configuring my controller than I have actually playing the games themselves.

A small sampling of some of the silly things I have spent hours setting up. It gets addictive for sure.

I'm a bit late but under Character Configuration -> Cross tab at the very bottom there's the WXHB input timer, if you scroll it to the right it increases the time in which you can input the double tap to switch to the WXHB. Using it on 50 with Cammelspit's advice and it seems to work rather well. Your experience may vary but I figure it worked for me, might work for you \o/

Here's what I did and it seems to work. Trigger type is a matter of preference here. Turn off analog. Set soft pull to the trigger you want. Set full pull to the trigger you want and go to activators. Set the first activator to "start press" and the second activator to regular press but give it one or two notches of delay start.

Now, whenever you soft pull, you get the trigger. When you long pull, you get a double tap that will let you hold the trigger to use the WXHB. You can now adjust the WXHB delay in FFXIV to a low setting so you don't accidentally activate it with a two soft pulls. If you quickly do a full pull, it will still activate the WXHB. One thing I noticed (and maybe smarter minds than me will know why) is that if you soft pull and wait and then full pull, you will not activate the additional crossbar. I'm not sure why this is but as long as you know that, it's definitely usable.
