Rumble feedback now making grinding noise
Can anyone help me to diagnose this problem;

The rumble feedback on the Steam Controller is now making a different noise, more like a grinding noise, than they used to.

I have tried making sure that I have joined the Steam Beta program and also switching the haptic feedback off and on again along with the rumble control.

To be honest it sounds like the controller needs a little bit of grease as the gears seem to grind.

Thanks

Well, I hate to say it but the rumble emulation is loud as a rule. Without a recording of exactly HOW it sounds, it's hard to say if there even is a problem. You can easily try a different frequency for the rumble emulation and see if that makes a difference for you. Lower frequencies may help you there if there isn't something genuinely wrong with your controller.

Mine makes a weird rattling noise when set to anything higher than default. It's just how haptics work.

Yep haptics just went grindy and horrible feeling after sc freaked out at a windows users authentication window for me too.

I tried to open an admin powershell window from windows hidden menu and sc lost focus. The global mappings or guide buttons did not bring steam back in to focus to regain input capabilities.

I had to use a keyboard to cancel uac request and still the steam controller would not work at all until i had alt + tabbed back to steam with kb and then powered off and powered sc back on.

I thought lizard mode was activated somehow but the sc is working as a controller again in desktop mode but haptics are noticably behaving odd. Something has changed.

Several regressions in latest beta client updates for sure.

When I first purchased the Controller it made the sort of noise which I would expect, similar to an Xbox controller, then a couple of months ago it changed and now sounds more like gears grinding, is this a known issue?

It is now. Three people reporting same thing makes it a bug. I personally think it is caused by several bugs. The uac thing. The mode shifting thing. The desktop/lizard mode thing. These are all long standing steam controller bugs. The horrible feeling and sounding haptics is the most tolerable of those bugs. The rest stop the controller from being usable.

Hopefully Valve will make a sc firmware upgrade that resolves all these bugs available soon.

I think this happened a few times before, one update made the left haptics sound weird, it may well be that some update changed how haptics behave (intentionally or not), and that this changed how they sound... Mine, apart from the rattling sound they make when rumble is set to higher than default, have only been affected by that left haptics thing. I haven't played anything with rumble in a while to know now for sure how it sounds now, but it's possible an update changed it.

wow my steam controller is pretty muchunusable at all now. If i click anything outside steam it stops working. If i power off and power back on without moving mouse cursor with another device it starts working again but stops working ahen i click anything in steam client.

This is actualy reproducable.

rflol eeeeeesh

EDIT: several reboots of windows did not fix. a cold boot returned sc back to expected behaviour. Looks like purging ram helped so looks like some kind of memory leak or something going on.

I got nice woking haptics again

Thanks for your feedback, I have taken a short (10 Sec) Video of the Controller making the grinding noise under normal use to help with any suggestions.

Do we know if any other Controllers have suffered the same?
