Where do i put my headphone jack in the Steam Machine / Controller?
Is there a place in the controller or the machine itself? Or can i put in the headphones at all? Sorry but i don't know any of the ''technical terms'' such as HDMI or USB etc. Sorry, but im kind of a noob at everything besides gaming. Anyway do i need something like a wireless headset?

The Steam Link lacks a headphone input, some Steam Machines do have them while most do not.

Does the Alienware Steam Machine have the input?

Check it yourself. Read the machine's description and technical specs.

i assume a wireless or usb headset would plug into the alienware steam machine. if you don't have that, perhaps an adapter like this could work?

Steam machine doesn't have a headphone or mic port. Just usb. I had to go on amazon and buy a usb to headphone adapter for mine. Or if you happen to have Bluetooth headphones or a stereo you can connect that way

What I use is a USB audio interface, the U-Phoria UMC204HD, a pair of Sound Magic HP150 cans and a decent but low-cost condenser MIC. I actually run a USB extension cable over to my couch where I have the mic on a stand next to me and the interface on the table right there too. I used to use a Logitech H800 Wireless Bluetooth headset. I suspect this is part of the reason Valve didn't add a port to the SC.

  1. Would increase cost of the controller.
  2. Decrases battery life
  3. PC users have TONS of ways to jack in so they don't really need it.

A Link or Steam Machine is meant for TV use and not really going to be close enough for plugging in as a rule. You should be able to use something like this and a decent extension cable.

I've never used the sound card thing but I have like 3 of those extension cables for various uses and they work quite well, that would be my suggestion.

I'm gonna have to disagree about not not needing a jack. My Xbox controller has one and the only time I use it is late at night to watch a movie or play some games without waking up everyone else. If mh steam controller had a jack i would probably sell my Xbox controller.

Necessary? No. Would be nice to have? Sure yeah. I was more pointing out what I believe is the reason why it's not there. If it could be cleanly dosabled, as in not being on and draining power at all, that would serve the function of being there when you want it and not being a power hog when it's not needed. I suspect the SCs cost to manufacture has come down some in the last year and a half so cost might not be as much of an issue now compared to where it was before. Most nice headphones need to be amped and good mics need high quality circuitry or even phantom power, like mine does, so they end up being impossible to plug in that way even if it was there. With all the options available to PC users it becomes less of an issue over what a console user might need.

One other option that might work for you Zombie, they make these battery powered Bluetooth adapters that you can plug a normal pair of headphones into that connect wirelessly to your PC via a Bluetooth connection. They can be as cheap as 10 bucks on amazon for the low-end ones, that might be a good way to go instead of waiting for them to add it to another model of the controller that might or might not have a jack added, just a thought.
