Note: may not work properly under native SC games and under non native games, you're under the mercy of the game's bindings. (keyboard and mouse, xbox controller, etc)
You're better off just experimenting and figuring it out for yourself, that's how most of us do it.
I think actual button combinations, where you press two or more buttons to get a specific binding, is one of the things Steam Input is lacking the most (except for DualShock 4 emulation, which is apparently more difficult than it seems according to this post).
I think a button combination function with a separate icon close to the "Always On" function (here[imgur.com]) would greatly enhance Steam Input. It would work just as normal inputs, you could choose different activators, such as regular press, long press, etc., only with two or more buttons required. You could perhaps choose from preset combinations (like the four face button combinations, RB+LB, RT+LT, RSC+LSC) or make your own combination. It would, of course, always use the basic buttons as set up in Big Picture's controller Define Layout, regardless of what the current bindings in the Controller Configuration are.
It's one of the things reWASD has that Steam Input lacks, in addition to the aforementioned DualShock 4 emulation.
Those functions work in a different way, don't they? I mean actually pressing two buttons (including face buttons) to get one binding, as the topic creator asked.
EDIT: You're right, it seems to work with chorded presses if you set it to both buttons. I thought it was only for holding down one button and pressing another. Doesn't work 100% but with A+X and B+Y, it seems fairly certain.
