Maybe people just don't care much of his profession and that what turns people off, right?
the fused gear is kinda of a turn off for me, sure I don't mind having the powerful skills with my weapon, but at the same time, I like to work my ass off on getting the most powerful weapon in the game, since there is none... I feel quite empty because of that and that negatively draws me away from this game a bit...

and it might help you with the fusion system to avoid repeating myself too much dont worry about it too much most content in the game outside of select bosses on chaos can be beat without stressing too much.
Despite the hate(?) the game gets in Japan, they'll still make an anime. The interesting thing for you is: the anime's tagline, which sounds like it will have something that comes after the game and that is shows a new character.
