You won't lose nothing by playing this one first.
That said, if you want to experience the longest tales game, you need to play Abyss (on PS2, not 3DS for best experience.) Also, if you've played Legend of Legaia, Zestiria may seem familiar.
If you want to experience one of the first Tales games with an "f arc" styled end-story, you need to play "Tales of Legendia" which is a pretty long game, but because of the massive amount of backtracking and forced walking... it's the main reason it is so long.
Well, since you haven't played any Tales games and ToZ will be your very first, you'll be fine as you don't have the "measuring stick" to compare other Tales games (unless you are reading reviews or watching gameplay videos of other Tales games).
Once you're done playing ToZ and you're interested in playing other Tales games, then ToZ will be your measuring stick.
This one is far from my favourite in the Tales Of series but it is a great JRPG (especially on PC which lacks it).
Long story short, the Tales Of games are different and depending on your taste, some will be a hit and others will be a miss.
The exceptions are Dawn of a New World and Tales Of Tempest which are both trash.
