Should I sell the knife?
I can't make up my mind. How hard is gald to come by and does the knife benefit you later in the game?

You can sell the knife. You can either give the 1,000g back to get it back or trade the pipe for an extra 500g plus a hat accessory.

you also can just get past the guard by just showing him the knife and he let you past lol

OP likely meant the first meeting with Rose where she asks to buy the knife before you're near the guard. There are multiple ways to get through the beginning. None break/lock anything.

You can sell the knife, keep the knife, sell the pipe, whatever. It doesn't make a big difference. Perfonally I sold Rose the knife for 1k during our first meeting and then traded the pipe for another 500g, hat, and her walking you past the guard.

1500g and a hat in excange for possibly having to buy the pipe back for 5k if it turns out to be important for anything.

the knife is needed to enter a ruin...plus after that you hand it over that to alisha ..
the pipe later down the line you give it back to your gradfather..he gives you an elixir in return... both these events have skits which you will miss out on if you dont do them

You get the knife back. I already said that. You don't miss anything trading the knife. You get it back. Instead of losing the pipe and having to buy it back you can trade the knife first, and then the pipe... you GET THE KNIFE BACK because that dungeon is part of the story you have to go through in order to proceed in the game.

Don't sell your knife. When you get the option to either hand over gald or item later, hand over the pipe instead; you will be able to get an attachment that way (which you cannot get otherwise). Even if you don't want it, it's still better to just show the knife directly to the guard at that point as it minimizes unnecessary running you have to do.

This isn't true. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Read.

1. Trade knife to Rose on first meeting = get 1,000g
2. Trade pipe to get knife back when you see her a very short time later = get 500g more and the hat accessory
3. Can still buy pipe back later if you wish.

I decided to keep the knife so I can give it back to Alicia since it was stated in the game that the knife is of royal descent in Hyland. She liked me a lot for giving it back.

I was more interested in giving the character back what belongs to them than whatever gold I'm going to get.

And I just bought the pipe back anyways, so everything turned out perfect.

I never had to give anything to Rose the first time, as I walked away from the bridge.
The second time, I gave the knife, got 500 gald, and then did a quest to get the knife back right afterwards.
No trouble gaining access to the ruins.

You still give the knife back to Alicia even if you sold it, because you do a small side-quest to get it back before that point (where you return it to her).

Basically, you're losing out on 1,000 gald if you don't sell the knife, because it's impossible to not get the knife back a short time later. It's very odd that the game essentially punishes you (you're 1,000 gald poorer) for not selling an obvious family heirloom that belongs to your friend (ironically Rose makes a point of telling you to be more careful about what you sell when she finally returns it), but there it is.

Sell the knife = 1,000 gald + getting the knife back before you actually need it + wondering why the game rewards bad roleplaying.

Not selling the knife = missing out on 1,000 free gald + feeling like your character made the right roleplay move. (shrug)

Don't be a punk and sell someone else belonging.
Agreed. Sell nothing. Not the knife or the pipe. I'm not a ♥♥♥♥, so I'm not going to sell other people's stuff. That's the right thing to do.
