Found a way to make x360ce work for those having 2 controllers detected
The issue: In short when you activate x360ce it will detect your emulated controller AND your USB controller as if there were 2 when physically there is only one controller. The issue with this is that some keys can't be mapped so you may experience ♥♥♥♥ed up issues, in my example, whenever I pressed L1 to transform it would pause the game because the game things Player 2 or 3 is pressing start.

The solution: The game doesn't let you assign the same input for 2 players so you get one stuck with Xbox, one with USB controller and one with your keyboard, gods know for what reason you can't turn any of them off either, so what you need to do is set player 1 to USB, close the game, remove all x360ce files from your game folder, start the game, now you'll see:

Player 1 = USB
Player 2 = Keyboard

There is no Player 3, leave it like that, close the game, copy your files over again and open the game, now you should see:

Player 1 = USB
Player 2 = Keyboard
Player 3 = keyboard

Go back to player 1 press left (was left for me) and it will change to XBOX controller, so now you have the 2 useless players using Keyboard while there are no ghost players messing with your controller input.

If, for some reason, you press the to the wrong side and end up switching to keyboard before you get to Xbox for your Player 1 you'll get stuck with 1 of each again, repeat the steps until you get it right.

Have fun.

I looked in my users//local//tales of zesteria folder and in my steam game folder and its sub folders, and found no x360ce files. Where else might they be? Also, I looked in that cfg file and this showed up:
ControlScheme00=1
ControlScheme01=0
ControlScheme02=-1
ControlScheme03=-1
I have no clue which is which. So I tried this

ControlScheme00=1
ControlScheme01=-1
ControlScheme02=-1
ControlScheme03=-1

Aaaaand... It worked!! No player 2 or 3 shows up in the Artes menu! And im just set for controller. That means it should work as desired in battle. Gonna try it now.......

EDIT: Nope, for some reason, my other main character cannot be switched to... No idea why, but even when I put him to Auto in Arte menu, he or his sub lord doesnt act in battle. I feel handicapped with only half the group doing stuff, so I'm gonna switch the cfg back to what it was before. Was a nice idea tho, just wont work for me.

It works only the first time you do it, the next time tou start the game it sets player 3 to the usb controller again. Tried setting the TOZ.cfg to read only but it still changes the controller

ah yeah found that myself. But at least now the P2 in auto control actually does things. Before, it would still do nothing until I did character switch in battle. Annoying.
For some reason resetting it in the config file worked and I dont have one character doing nothing now.

Doesn't work for me, I've tried so many things, why can't I just tell this game that I don't want a player 3.

That would be because the game supports both XInput and DirectInput controllers and x360ce is a crappy piece of software that fails to hide the original DirectInput controller from the OS when it creates its fake XInput controller.

Blame x360ce, not the game.

We need to use X360ce because this game can't detect the controllers otherwise, so it is the game's fault

i tried exactly what you said and i've tried MANY times what #3 said, in #3's case when i open and exit the game the TOZ.cfg goes back to it's original in your case, i don't get player 2 and player 2 keyboard instead player 2 keyboard and player 3 xbox, if anyone knows some tips please i need help, i'm using a cracked version of the game and i'm not sure if that's the issue

check " Exclude supplemental devices " in the option tab of x360ce if the controller is being registered as 2 devices.
