This game is better than I expected
Okay its not Xillia or Graces F but from the amount of hate it gets I was expecting total trash, which it isn't. Aside from the battle camera sometimes getting stuck, the fusion system, and the skill sheet it's an ok game. Like for example I've seen people say "armatization is trash" but it seems fine to me. It reminds me of the Claw attack in berseria tbh (one button transformation feature that makes you OP)

Contrast that with the fact I just platinumed Arise and really did not enjoy the combat in the slightest (a game that I see many people praising)

Facebook groups, YouTube comments, reddit comments, other articles online. I commonly see poeple trashing Zestiria. I used Arise as an example because that game sees to be well liked and I think it's worse than Zestiria

Man it does exist people wouldn't be bringing it up if it didn't.

But I also don't see it I think it one of the best jrpgs I've played not just in the tales series but out of most jrpgs. Final Fantasy is also a series I like but I've beat most of them, started tales cause I loved phantasia back in the day and symphonia looked like a cool game ever since I saw it on GC. So currently beat phantasia, destiny, symphonia, vesperia, and zestiria. In my opinion zestiria is my 2nd fav one so far and that's just cause I love symphonias storyline and characters. Its just a good rpg, it starts off small and unasuming, builds the characters up, introduces a lot of cool moves and gameplay mechanics. The seraphin angle is new, and having people fuse and turn into super sayan like powered up fantasy heros is also fun. The storyline and voice acting is also well done. Of course everyone is welcome to their opinions. I think there are better rpgs for storyline and characters but to me zesteria is good for replay and gameplay. There's a lot to do, and its not just confusing puzzles or lame mini games. Its an actual combat focused and heavy system. The enemies are tanks with varying difficulties and the drop/grade system actually makes beating them worthwhile. Its sold beseria for me but not gonna move onto that till I'm finished I don't jump into sequels just cause people say its better than the first 1. A sequel is suppose to be better than the first 1. Still got the alisha dlc and having some troubles with heldalf on the 2nd go round. Dudes not easy.

If I were to say why some old tales fans might not like this game, its probably cause its so different from the traditional tales like phantasia. Those games were focused more on a full cast of characters with their own motives. This is different the characters feel kind of attached to sorey and rose in a way because of the whole spiritual seraphin pact thing. The transforming into elemental super versions is also something other tales didn't do in the past. A lot of other mechanics are also different in zestiria such as no overworld map, instead it took more of a zelda walk and explore approach. Some of the old fans might not of liked that, but I didn't mind, there's enough fast travel and navigation to make it not just a tedious walk fest. And exploring can do a lot of good for the party.

Regions just look up the wiki or type in tales of zestiria controversies, this is a mixed opinion game. I think its an awesome rpg myself does what an rpgs suppose to do, starts off slow and not very powerful and gradually builds up. And keeps building there's almost to much stuff to do. And with added dlc its even more replayable. Love this game one of my fav tales games.

Great Post. Another thing I would add is that if people simply don't like the "I win" transformation (a complaint I have heard) they don't have to use it. The thing is though it's not really like that because some enemies take more damage when you're not armatized

Another complaint I have heard is badly designed dungeons or lame corridor dungeons. Well both of these are nonsensical bs because quite a few of the dungeons do have puzzle elements to them.

My only complaints so far with the game are 1) how you can't see the full map and have to scroll around (just make the map smaller so I can see everything at once) and 2) the camera in battle gets stuck a lot inside enemies or against a wall. This can get quite frustrating. These would be welcome QoL fixes for me

Compared to the last game I played (Arise) its not even close how better this game is to that one on so many different levels

A friend of mine told me arise was trying to be overly difficult with dark souls like gameplay. I’m not sure I might like it but I downloaded the demo and it didn’t even boot up on my pc. Zesteria and vesperia run very nice think I’ll stick with them and eventually berseria when I complete zesteria if I ever do. There is a ton of stuff to do in it.

The dungeon complaint doesn’t really register for me as to me a good rpg system could be simple menu navigation. If the battle systems good it doesn’t matter much to me. Although I didn’t really get lost with the maps and in game guides. Funny this games actually easier and more casual to navigate imo than most popular rpgs which make dungeons confusing on purpose.

The worst thing I can say about zesteria is they didn’t think some of the menu navigation through. Might get fixed in berseria but…If I’m grinding chaos and doing good getting items etc..Then run into a golem with a ton of frickin hp just cause I opened a chest.. Then I can’t even run from it, and there’s not even an in game battle menu to go back to the title screen? Hard reset close the whole program down. Gotta either save often, keep it on basic if you’re opening chests, or just don’t open them at all when you grind chaos. The mimic was not done properly and it’s imo the worst aspect of this fine rpg.

100% agree the dev who worked on combat in Arise seems to be fixated with making it as Dark Souls esque as possible in every facet, since everything has limitations. It's like dev sat there saying "nope too easy". I mean we get it the tales games are generally easy but people enjoy easy games and don't want to have to be as hard-core as souls games on their first playthrough (the game pulls this nonsense on the easiest difficulties never mind the hardest ones)

Yea that’s kinda what I thinks ruining the industry I came from the space invaders era I’ve beat some hard games. Also gave up on some overly frustrating games. It’s suppose to be entertainment not a proving ground least imo. Kinda what ruined ori and the blind forest for me. Excellent game with a nice 2d rpg system and great music and atmosphere. But getting crushed by something every 2 steps. Yea I’ve beat every 2d Metroid and they never had constant instant kills. It’s like gaming become to serious and I appreciate a game that actually awards you for beating harder difficulties like zestiria instead of punishing you constantly.

Also was not that into dark souls from what I played. Extremely overrated game. Ninja gaiden on Xbox 5 years before it was doing the same gameplay against badass opponents at a lightning pace. People seem to think ds is original.

Yeah it's not original to me either. It's just an exercise in reflexes and patience. That was fine 20-30 years ago when we didn't know better but modern games over the last 30 years have introduced lots of QoL additions. I agree it shouldn't be some proving ground "my nan is harder than your nan" on normal difficulties.

Don't get me wrong cater to those types with extreme difficulty modes but at the end of the day I don't find running around waiting for an opening to hit 1-2 times then back off again because if you get hit you die. Never worked out the numbers but in Arise you probably have to hit some enemies like 100 times. Gaming shouldn't be a chore like but also shouldn't just be we one hit everything. When games make enemies perma chain stun you if you make one tiny mistake is just not my thing. If people love that cool cater to them, just keep it off the lower difficulties

Just finished Vesperia after 60hrs, Now I am playing this and its such a huge jump in scale and animation with the mocap stuff. Combat is fun at least for me. I like it. Cant wait to play Berseria. The story is fun as well, I like Sorey and the characters around him.

Yea same I think symphonia was a better lore and world and the characters were cool. But there’s just something zany about the zestiria crew that I love. Especially mikleo I don’t care what anyone says he grows on you and he’s full of funny come backs to Edna’s snide. Was hilarious when they made fun of sorey for archeology and mikleo said you guys are so mean.

Also when Simone said something about your precious comedian about rose, then lailah gets angry. Spot on anime comedy.

Mileo is awesome. Him and Sorey always playfully fighting is awesome. Reminds me of when I was a kid and had a neighborhood best friend. We'd always rough house and get into trouble. I love Edna and Lailah. cant wait to meet more party members. Peoples complaints make me think they dont enjoy life in the real world.

Well can’t really spoil it if you’re not that far along yet but the next 2 you get are pretty funny. Although one’s kinda serious funny.

Good to hear you are enjoying the early start it’s one of those rpgs that imo gets better the farther in you get.

As for the players who don’t like it, well everyone’s got an opinion I try not to be hard on a game unless it’s Superman 64 level bad. But I did have some gripes about vesperias storyline in places. Great combat and gameplay/graphics however.

Trust me, there were times in Vesperia where I wanted to smash my controller. Especially with story pacing. You think its coming to its conclusion and then NOPE you havent done everything you need to do. Also some of the backtracking sucked. I didnt realize up until 50ish hrs that I could equip skills haha once I did that though it changed for the better.

Vesperias still a very nice game, I liked duke as an enemy cause he wasn’t just a crazed nihilist he was actually reasonable and after some struggling they actually convinced an end boss to help. Don’t see that much in jrpgs. Although I really did not like the don’s public execution. It seemed pointless and rushed and Yuri just jumped at that execution role with no argument. I’m sure sorey and even rose wouldn’t of been that quick to do that. Rose only kills the worst she even let that awful regent live.

Yeah that whole part made no sense. I was so confused when Yuri said "Ill be your second." I was like,... is Yuri about to take Don's place? lol Nope. He's gonna aid in the execution. And no one bats an eye afterwards like "Damn you just willingly went along with that?" They obviously needed the Don to die but maybe they couldve done it in a more heroic way...
