Fishing rods need to be more common
It's a crucial tool and I have never found it in any village in the game world (without starting with it). The next best thing is a spear, but you can barely get enough fish to survive with a spear (and I always put a point into fishing).

At the very least make the fishing rod craftable. I mean it's one of the most primitive tools in existence. Just a stick and a cord. How do you guys survive without starting with one?

where have you been looking? because its a somewhat common tool in the south west part of the island with those clans. I usually live by archery or chasing them down with javlins (dogs are insanely useful nowadays) been playing this game for years

All of my games have been in the north or east so maybe that's my problem. I haven't tried using animals yet. What makes dogs useful?

Being in the north you should have invested in trapping but you can overcome that. What I did was kill enough travlers to keep me fed (warriors included) and the supplies I gain from that can buy me a dog but what they do is occasionaly bite the animals (which damages the hide) but they mostly tire it out so you can run on them and cripple them. If you dont want to be a murderer you can arrow them down which has a similar effect when it comes to slowing them down with injuries but if you are a terrible bowman make javlins (however they are spelt) but they are a lot less effective. im not a super pro at this game i only have 1 game thats been around a few years. But ive never starved to death

Ugh I just checked about 20 villages in Sarto and Driik territory and found not one single fishing rod. How do these bastids have smoked breams and perches but nothing to catch it with? And how can they all afford to build fancy saunas but don't have a stick with a cord attached to it?

I checked about 3 islander villages but then I drowned while trying to swim between islands. Still couldn't find anything. I try to survive mostly on hunting and trapping too but initially I fish while I get my traps set up. But without a rod you get so little fish it's impossible to do anything but fish all day. I'm not that great at hunting either, I usually lose the animals in the woods.

Finally found one in a Driik village. I still think they need to be less rare

This has been checked recently and fishing rod availability will be increased in the next patch among kiessa, kaumo, sarto and archipelago. Among other cultures the availability seemed fine, but especially the rural and sparsely populated kaumo and kiesse villages were far too often out of fishing rods. It should be noted that fishing rods are also restocking tools, so if you can't find one right away the village may still stock them few weeks later. But anyway, it's to be adjusted.
