WOW! This game is brutal!!
I just played my first game, had setup a nice shelter and was in the process of building my own tent. I went to stop by the nearby ice lake to grab some water, and BOOM! the ice breaks beneath me. My guy drowns after a dozen turns or so. He only survived a week.

RIP Authgrim.

Oh that sucks! At least you hadn't had him for a long time. I had a character survive having his eye gouged out, only to succumb to the icy waters of the North! If you absolutely have to go onto the ice for something, you should always crawl. Going prone will spread your weight out and greatly reduce the chances of breakage.

Yeah, I was surprised by the brutality of the game. Watching my guy slowly drown while frantically saving himself was very disturbing. :p

But this seems like a great survival game! I'm really enjoying it, although I'm still struggling in the early stages to become self-sufficient in food. At the moment, all I can do is craft staves and trade them for turnips and meat. Hunting just seems too difficult.

Does it? As a long experienced player I could help you out with it. Just send me a friend request if you'd like some help!

Ugh, active hunting is so frustrating. I looted a bow and some arrows off an adventurer, found some reindeer but I always miss whenever I shoot.

Get some dogs. No joke. I used to be in the same boat as you man. I thought hunting was impossible. On a whim I decided to try dog hunting and it changed the game for me. Just order your dogs to attack the elk/stag/whatever and they'll chase it. You will lose sight of them, but keep following the text cue "You hear a bark of alarm in x direction" and you'll eventually catch up to your dogs with a breathless/possibly wounded animal.

Waltz up and deliver the killing blows and youre all set. I've got hundreds of meat cuts already thanks to this simple thing. Dogs really arent too expensive either.

Hunting can indeed be a hard task. If you want to be a hunter it's important that you have the right set charachter attributes right from the start: strenght, endurance, speed, eyesight, etc.

And offcourse the right set of skills: bow and spear at minimum 70% (at least that's my opinion). De skills stealth and tracking are important to, but those you can learn very fast during the game.

My advice during the game is:
- do not attack bears alone unless you have full armour, good skills and plenty of good weapons.
- if you want to catch an elk or stag... try to find them in a pine mire or lake area...so you can pin them to the water side. They will have no way to flee but in your direction. Then you can shoot them with your bow or even get close enough to stab them with your spear.
- when on a hunting trip, don't forget your fishing rod.... you can fish your daily needs of food, and spend other time hunting for bigger game. That way you can cover a lot more land.
- Use mountains and hilltops to scout the surrounding area, make a 360° turn on them.
- Go hunting a soon as the small hours hit... you may get lucky and find an animal still sleeping untill late morning. That way you can sneak up, and use an handaxe to cut his neck, and kill it in a single blow.
- Later on in the game: use dogs. I prefer 2 dogs, as a perfect foodcost vs hunting results outcome. Beside those two dogs come in handy when you run into robbers or Njerpez warriors.
- When you have plenty of food, try to find a goods pot to make pits and traps. Use a treeline of forest to a pine mire to build pits and fences...so big game that comes from the pine mire to the forest will have to follow your fens into a pit. If you want to catch wolfs or bear, throw some fresh meat on the pit holes... ;)

I found crafting wooden objects like boards and staves, and trading for food, to be more stable. I'm not sure if this is a long-term strategy, though, as I don't know how often villages replenish their goods. Maybe once I exhaust the food in one village, I'll travel to the next.
You can also often manage to run things down if you get in a crippling shot, that is how I generally do most of my hunting, spawn in, try and hide and get within 4-5 tiles of the animal then give it a broadhead aimed at the body, touch wood you will get in a good wound and some bleeding, then you keep your veiw zoomed out and just keep chasing the thing till you catch it and spear it in the back of the head

A few years back a guy came to the URW forums complaining. Apparently he engaged a beaver in the wild and the thing scored a lucky strike, "completely severing" his groin. He survived but the injury was permanent, the character was forever stuck with that severed groin.

Since then some extra checks were added so small animals are not quite as deadly as that most of the time, but those lucky strikes are still possible.

Watch out for beaver out there, fellas.

@klacoste:

They replenish food and such quite often, maybe every couple of weeks. But it depends on the time of year too - in mid summer they will have a lot of turnips (this is right after they ripen), and then near august-sept harvest time they will have a big abundance of everything to trade, including even more turnips. Over winter this abundance slowly dwindles away as they trade it or eat it.

In spring time when almost all the harvest is gone, they seem to start stocking salted, smoked and dried food.

Their selection of armor and weapons takes longer but also will be replenished eventually. The only thing that won't replenish at all right now are the penned animals in villages.

Trapping, trapping, trapping. And fishing when the traps are empty.

definately the best bet for beginners IMO, is a start with the "i wanna be a fisherman" scenario in the summer, building a shelter and a raft on the first day and setting the nets on the 2nd day followed by a bit of active fishing and when you managed do get some reserves start building a trap-fence with pits^^
that way i managed to survive the first winter with my 5th character (i never played the tutorial therfor i lost 3 characters while learning the basics) =D
