Blacksmiths do not accept alternatives

Did I get it right, that blacksmiths just demand specific items and offer no other alternative? I can't make my own offer like with normal trading. Or am I missing something?

You can't actually pay until the item is ready to pick up. When you first order the item, you can do the "what would you want from me" dialogue to get a sense of the price, but you aren't actually paying at that point. Once your order is ready, you can pay with any items they would normally accept for a transaction of that value.

Thanks, at first I thought that blacksmith's response to "what would you want from me" is the only offer he would accept
