tree respawn?
I was wondering if trees regrow after a couple of years. This because I already need a lot of trees to make the buildings in my sertlement, but I'm worried that once I'll start chopping them for firewood as well, I'll end up in a dead wasteland soon. And while the map is ofc full of trees, hauling them from long distances seems like a chore without some sort of cart or transport over ground.

How does everyone else make sure they don't run out of firewood?

This is one more reason that, when you want to do some serious building, you should try choosing a location with access to a large body of water. Other than that, as mentioned you don't need to keep a fire going at all times. Decent clothes & bedding is fine enough. Light a fire as needed.

But yes, trees absolutely respawn. They do take a decent amount of time though, and you need to let them go through all three phases, sapling - young tree - mature tree. So if you want them to regrow, chop your spalings for withe elsewhere, they at least are light enough to carry. Hope this helps

I just don't use that much firewood, because of the time it takes. And then when I do need to, I use a prescribed amount to just do what needs to be done (warm frostbite, smoke food, bathe in the sauna etc). You only need 5 fire wood and 5 sticks to light them, to keep smoke for the smoked food each day, for example. Bedding is important and I usually lay on a pile of spruce branches or a winter elk/bear skin.

Saplings do seem to pop up in the spring though... but don't quote me on that I'm unsure at the moment because it is winter time and I moved across the land to a new location.

Ok, so you can get by just heating with branches too then? At least those are endless :-)

Yep, You can equate a piece of firewood into a number of branches. I want to say 25-30 branches = 1 piece of prepared firewood. But don't quote me on that either.

Yea I could have sworn this was true too. I am pretty certain that we can have berry bushes spawn too in our yards landscape, and if I am also not mistaken I could swear that if we leave logs laying around in the outside, that they can spawn mushrooms.

If I'm not mistaken on all that anyway... maybe my memory is playing tricks on me but I don't think it is.

Game is incredibly dynamic and deep in small features. Things like this make this game all the better.

When I settle down for longer period, then its important to choose the right location.
Great Lake or a River has to be there.

In case you run out of nearby trees to make logs for building or your carpentry business, you can use a punt or raft to go over the water and chop trees there.
Push the trees onto the raft/punt and ship it to your home.
Works for me very good.

Raft can carry more than the punt. It will be interesting when/if rolling logs down river gets implemented.

I tend to settle at areas that are the mouth of a river near the sea, or on the edge of a marsh. Settling on the edge of a marsh ensures plenty of trees in close proximity, while being near water for day to day use where settling near the mouth of a river ensures steady supply of fish once you have enough nets (five seems comfortable).

Currently I'm settling at the mouth of a river near the open ocean on a rapids, with cliffs to my north and west tiles. It felt like a really super choice spot so even though it is near bandits, I'm going to take it. There is some open marsh a bit north too, which makes for great hunting grounds also, and of course the river and sea shore will give me greater ability to travel during the summer with my punt.
